So I am not a runner, but there is this 5K and Half Marathon in Seaside the first weekend in Mar '06. You guys have probably learned that I like to shake things up a bit. Well, I signed up for the Half Marathon. I know I bit off more than I can chew, but I have big eyes. My thought is that if I don't set big goals, I don't accomplish big goals. I never thought about training schedules until tonight. When I started looking around on the net, the training schedules all consists of at least 18 weeks of training for those who already run. :funn:Did I say that I don't currently run?

Question - can any runner (not you lazy bums like me) out there direct me to a quicker training schedule, and I am not talking about one which starts with 3 miles like some of the schedules which I found tonight? I don't want to finish the race like :puke:

You'll be fine if it's not until March. Look up those training schedules. A co-worker of mine is running the marathon in Philly this weekend and she's only running 4 miles today...but ran 20 over the weekend. You can do it if this hefer can do it. Trust me.

Well, the weather should be great. That's something!

I read Runners World for years because my husband got it. I don't run; I just don't enjoy it or have the body for it but always wished I did. RW is the best. Great articles and lots of good info. I went to their site just now and found an article called Running 101 that probably has the best advice for you: Don't be afraid to walk! The last thing you want to do is injure yourself. I doubt that there are any bonafide training regimens for your situation -- you may have to mix and match to get something that works. I'm sure you can figure it out. But take it easy. If that other guy can walk from the southern tip of S. America to Alaska, you can run/walk 13.1 miles.

Another site my hubby goes to is Coolrunning.com. His current marathon training schedule comes from there.

(Keep in mind that I have only read about this, not actually done it ... typical TFT behavior, actually.)

I have no problems walking. I have done a bit of that. ;-) I will be fine if I end up having to walk some of the race. It is not like I am trying to qualify for the Ironman.

Thanks for the lead on Coolrunning.com, but I have already checked them out and there training schedules don't work for my time frame or current level of running (zero). I will probably just wing it doing as much cycling and excercise as running. Not a problem, but just thought I would check with you guys to see if I may get lucky.:D I will check out RW, too.

Yes SJ...go for it!! You'll have the whole board behind you (except for anyone currently blocking you!!!...that's JUST a joke!)! You can keep a log on this board and we can see your progress. You might inspire some computer potato (who you looking at?) to get up and get moving! We can support and push you when you get ready to throw in the towel! Tell me the date and I will do my best to be down there and cheer you from the sidelines...even if I never get the chance to meet you in person! (I will) Think of the cool new running shoes you will need! Just do it!

hee hee hee You and I could SIGN UP for a half marathon...and maybe YOU could actually run it!

TFT....I cracked up when you said that about 'watching'. I watch some of these exercise shows and think ..." I could do that, no sweat"!!! But no actual sweat comes after I say that!!!

Go for it. I have a friend that never ran a marathon and completed the Music City Marathon and the one in Chicago last year. It takes some dedication, but you seem to be one to acomplish that task.

Here's what ya do. Train in Ashville. That will make any race in FL seem like a piece of cake.

Great idea! Now if this is a mini iron man you'll have to wear a bannana hammock

Oh SJ--you knew your simple question about running would shift to butts and banana hammocks! :floor:

The friend I spoke of took donations and wrote the names all over...shirt, shorts, arms, legs. There was a photo in the Nashville paper. It was really cool to see the names of people being honored or memorialized for cancer. He earned quite a bit of $$$$$$ to donate to cancer research.

I believe there's a running coach with a 2nd home in Blue Mountain. Last year, he did a clinic or two, organized through the store named Run (for your life). Run is on the S/S of 30A in that new shopping center next to the old Goatfeathers. Missy, the owner of Run can probably get you hooked up with him. It seems silly to hire someone to teach you how to run, but as my joints get creakier, I've been thinking about getting with him myself. Sadly, I've become too busy for my 4 mile walks, and need to switch to running.
I walked the 5K last year; that event is absolutely fabulous.

On a different note, SJ, is your canoe white?

Sj must have started his training regimen this morning- look out SoWal! Wonder if it will be hard to run while holding his camera and taking pictures?

I am getting some great ideas from you guys. I like the SoWal ad -- maybe I will wear a WoWal sticker, or make my own shirt, with permission ffrom the holder of the copyright ;-). The fundraiser came to mind very briefly, but I will have to think about that. (This is my first race). Trainer? Not for my first event. I have a few friends who I may seek for advice. They are hardcore, maybe too hardcore for me, but they started somewhere. One competed in Hawaii Ironman, and the other is currently training, trying to qualify for Hawaii Ironman.

Thanks

...and no, my canoe is not white.;-)

Here is a link to the Ky Derby Festival mini- marathon training schedule. No, you won't end up in the infield! This is a Louisville tradition that has been going on since I was young, and every year we know people that run it for the first time. Training starts in Jan for a May race, and everyone is always talking about their training schedule. Whole offices of people form a team and train and run together.

Hey SJ-

Here's a link to a training schedule for beginners that starts 12 weeks out, starting with 2 mile runs.

http://www.stlouismarathon.com/stl_marathon/event_details/TG_Half_Marathon_NOV.asp

It may not be exactly what you are looking for, but it's worth a shot. I ran track in high school and wanted to run a marathon before I turn 30, but it's been forever since I've run, too. I'm still thinking about it, but it is so hard to get back into it! Once you do, though, you feel like you can run forever. Start running at a pace where you can still carry on a conversation, the goal is distance, not speed. Then, once you can run further, you can work on speed if you're really concerned about time. Otherwise, just run at a comfortable pace.

Lucky and Jdarg, I appreciate the links, but they begin with 2 and 3 mile runs. If I ran 2 miles today, I would be out of breath and energy for the remainder of the week. I have a feeling that I need an extra 8 weeks to really do this right without injury. I am just going to take it easy and do what I can, with good rest in between. Thanks again.

What about running some 5k races? You could train for those at your own pace and the races themselves would prepare you for longer runs, leading to that half marathon.

I need some inspiration, too!

Sounds great, but I have already registered for the half marathon. I am not worried though, just trying something different. I will be lucky to bring my @ss home, much less a trophy. :D
