Bit Off Too Much???

So I am not a runner, but there is this 5K and Half Marathon in Seaside the first weekend in Mar '06. You guys have probably learned that I like to shake things up a bit. Well, I signed up for the Half Marathon. I know I bit off more than I can chew, but I have big eyes. My thought is that if I don't set big goals, I don't accomplish big goals. I never thought about training schedules until tonight. When I started looking around on the net, the training schedules all consists of at least 18 weeks of training for those who already run. :funn:Did I say that I don't currently run?

Question - can any runner (not you lazy bums like me) out there direct me to a quicker training schedule, and I am not talking about one which starts with 3 miles like some of the schedules which I found tonight? I don't want to finish the race like :puke:

You will probably have the largest fan base and cheering section in the race!

Sorry- too much pressure!

You might inspire some computer potato (who you looking at?) to get up and get moving!Think of the cool new running shoes you will need!
Oh, I thought he was looking at me! Whew.
And, SS, I like the way you think, girlfriend. I always say it's all about the gear!

Sounds great, but I have already registered for the half marathon. I am not worried though, just trying something different. I will be lucky to bring my @ss home, much less a trophy. :D

Good luck and just take your time!
BTW, can't believe your friend did an Ironman. I love watching the stories behind the people who do that. One guy collapsed just yards from the finish line one year--awful!

I did not say that she completed it. The IronMan is one crazy course from what she tells me -- head winds coming and going, 110+ temps on through the lava fields, uphill is as much a struggle as downhill, racing at others' paces hoping the you will be able to meet the time mark so that you can continue the race, etc. She did a bit of crawling, with some crying, too. She burned out on the bike, and collapsed when she began running. After sitting there for 20 minutes contemplating what the heck she was doing there at IronMan, she stood up and began walking, which eventually turned into a jog. She made it about 17 miles, and collapsed again, and crawled for a short distance, and cried for a long time. This is a young mother of two who had never swam a day in her life until she saw the IronMan on TV one day. It was then that she set her mind to race IronMan, and within two years, she had qualified. I should note that she was already a runner, but had not been on a bike for ten years. She is a real go getter, and I am very proud of her. She cheered me on from afar when I took on a big challenge of my own a few years ago.

My other friend has some qualifier triathalons coming up next year, including the one in PC in the spring, which is a huge one. I may do some bike training with her, but I don't think I will be running with her.

Great idea! Now if this is a mini iron man you'll have to wear a bannana hammock
:lolabove: Yeah, then you'd have to get SoWal.com tattooed on your butt checks :clap_1:

No, I don't think you bit off too much. I am thinking that you will do it, do it well and live to tell about it. I get the feeling that anything you set your mind to, you accomplish! Good Luck and keep us posted on the training. Oh, but don't train so much that you are too tired to post!!!!

Do you think SoWal could have a competition like they did on Revenge of the Nerds. My favorite event would be drinking a beer for every lap I did on my tricycle. Just a thought.

SJ, I ran the 5k in Rosemary in the beginning of October. It was tiny compared to Seaside. Always a blast, though. Find you a running buddy and you can chat it up the whole time and you'll be done before you know it.
(I don't know if someone has already said this. I am ADD today so only picking out key words like they taught me.)

I have too much trouble just breathing as I run -- the only chatting I would be doing is gasping out "Call 9-1-1!"

Thanks SJ for registering for the Seaside Half Marathon, which benefits the Seaside Neighborhood School. The organizers of the race (of which I am one) are very excited about the event this year. It's going to be even bigger and better than last year. It's not just a race, it's going to be a weekend of fun and festivities.

I think the SoWalers should all register and run the race together and support one another. Wear SoWal shirts and get the word out to the rest of the world! Hey, the more people that register, the more money we raise! All of the organizers are volunteers, so 100% of the funds raised go directly to the Seaside School, a public charter school. The funding we get from the county pays for the teachers, but everything else is paid for by money that we raise. Come support us!
