Ok, this pup-rescue adventure is prompting this thread.
I've never had more than one dog at once. Last night my friend told me that "two dogs are better than one. But three dogs are worse than one or two, because things start to get political." Interesting!
What is your experience with one dog vs. two? Is two better than one? Two can keep each other company, sure, but if you travel a lot as we do, it would seem much harder to deal with. You can bring one dog to a friend's house, but not two. We were initially just trying to foster and place this little pup, but I think I may already be in love... ;-) Any thoughts or advice?
edit: sorry Kurt, meant to post this in the Lounge. I can't figure out how to move it...

i've had two in one form or another for years. the oldest, jessie, is approx 15. an abused ranch dog, i got her from the code enforcement officer and vet tech outside the post office in telluride. she was to be terminated the next day. i absolutely did not need ay more resposibilty(was just about to open the peaks), but i was hooked. she went everywhere with me in the '73 bus, dead shows in vegas, wedding in NY, miami, everywhere. best jobsite dog too, comes in, sniffs around a bit, then hangs out. she taught a girlfriend's yellow lab pup how to be a dog, and lived as a unit for 5+ years. when girlfriend wanted dog back after a year of living in chicago, when we got back to telluride, she was always looking for Luna. she needed a new friend.
a few weeks later someone had left Sadie behind when they left the telluride bluegrass festival. a friend took her in, but already had two dogs, perfect for me. i went to visit her and what a handful, barking madly at me before i even got out of the bus. i took her anyway, and she and jessie are like two peas in the pod. she doesn't realize how frail jessie is, but i think she honestly helps jessie seem younger tha she is. i'm hoping sadie won't go through major withdrawal when jessie passes. not sure how soon i'll be able to get another dog. it will probably make sadie and me tighter.

Kate and Allie were the exceptions.Yes we have always had a boy and girl. B&G adore each other. They were crate mates. They love to find a sunny spot and snuggle next to each other. The rare times we board them, they are together. They do sleep in seperate crates ( the rare time they are not hogging our bed).Mocha and Chocolat (1980-1996) weren't at all jealous of our one and only child (1985). Your dogs will get used to Camden.
They love to romp and play. The jury is still out when it comes to Camden. They view him as an intruder, so far! :funn: We are working on that socializtion process.
Our Pepper, on the other hand, wants to be in the middle whenever Dr. Beach Runner and I kiss or hug. When he gets home in the evenings, she wants his attention to the point that when we start to carry on a conversation about our respective day's activities, she barks to stop our conversation so that we'll focus on her.

So, do you re-use the dryer sheets? :floor:
no - in my experience, they don't smell quite so fresh when they come out the nether end of the dog ! 😀

I am sorry I missed the beginning of this thread, but it's so weird that you started it, katie blue. I just had this conversation today with the lady who gave me our precious Maggie (black lab). Lately, she's been impossible to get outside in the mornings when we leave. She heads immediately for her crate and will not come out. We just feel so sorry for her, being in there all day. But she hates going outside unless we go with her. So, my friend and I think that she needs a playmate. But, hubby is dead set against it. Says he spends too much time tending "the herd". We also have two cats inside, and two outside that I adopted when the neighbor moved away and left them. So, I can understand his viewpoint, but I just think Maggie would be a much happier little lab with a friend. Any more ideas on how to convince him? :idontno:

Are you sure you're not pulling our leg here? This is exactly like that Weimeraner (sp) in the movie "Best in Show." :idontno:

I can't believe you've never heard about that movie. Now I know for sure you're pulling our leg. It's all about show dogs and the people who own them! It's a satire and wickedly funny. One of the dogs does not care for it when his human parents want to make love. It's the opening scene of the movie.

i am not allowed to touch, kiss, hug, or be near my hubby when dory is in the room. she is ungodly and i mean ungodly jealous of him. she growled at my mom for hugging him at christmas time. me, i am just the one who does everything for her. an axe murdered could come after me and she wouldn't care as long as he didn't wake her up. and she's my dog. what's up with that ? :idontno:

Well, in the movie, the couple goes to the doggie psychiatrist.

Wow, I never knew rawhides, etc. were so bad! 😱 They only get them maybe once a week, but still. What's so bad about them? Now I'm worried. Rudy, the bigger dog, is what I'd call an aggressive chewer. He has that chew stick done in 2 minutes. So, I suppose that's the danger - - getting stuck in his throat!! (Remember, I've always been a cat person most of my life.)

ummmm no. i go the cheap route and kick her a$$ to the hallway or outside when she starts getting too nasty. it can be cute tho, she has to be laying beside him, she lays in his chair when he is working, and she has to be facing him at all times. i didn't know he was that great !

That's the way my pup is, and I've never heard of that movie. And I'm not into dog shows, even though apparently from her siblings' successes, mine could be a champion by age 2. I just don't see the point of that unless you're trying to sell pups. Pepper was spayed in November because spaying before the first heat virtually eliminates her chances of breast cancer.

we did the exact same thing with dory - she got spayed the day after she turned 6 months.

The rare times we board them, they are together. They do sleep in seperate crates ( the rare time they are not hogging our bed). What was crazy with the two poodles was in the wintertime when they both were under the bedcovers. Whenever we would move, they would assume that the other dog was pouncing. So there'd be this big ball of poodles fighting under the covers while we're in deep sleep. One of us would always wake up and separate them. Finally, Mocha learned to share my pillow and let the alpha dog, Chocolat, sleep at the foot of the bed (under the covers).

:floor: From another thread, if we spoil our dogs like this, no wonder our children (or at least mine) are spoiled rotten!
Bailey is the same, spoiled rotten, won't let us speak to each other until she feels she's been greeted with the appropriate length and enthusiasm she deserves.
BR, "Best in Show" is one of the funniest movies ever. All these different couples from different backgrounds (the rednecks, the gay couple, the neurotic yuppies, the rich heiress, etc), all wrapped up in the dog show world. Same guys that did Spinal Tap and Mighty Wind. I never get tired of it.

I've got to get me a copy of that movie. My mom breeds and show Shelties and I'm always preaching to her about it because I just don't agree with bringing more into the world and think mixed pets are just as great but I do try to support her and go with her when I can to these shows and what a joke it is! I think I live the movie :floor:. Who's stabbing who's back then kissing up to your face. And primping the dogs all up with little umbrellas over them and fans on them. :rolling::rolling:And can't forget the one with the nastiest looking dog that apparently knows the judge quite well and just happens to win first place. Got to get a copy of that movie!

BR- we just planned out your weekend for you! You are watching Best In Show! And you are going to wet your pants laughing.
Back to the rawhides, pig ears, etc. You don't know the source of these things- many come from overseas and unsanitary conditions. I mean really, do you think the pig ear processing plant in parts unknown is concerned about cleanliness, since it's customers are dogs? Also, there may be chemicals and additives put on them that are not approved here in the US. Many of these rawhide products are soaked in flavoring- salt. Ask about the source when you buy them, and like GTTBM, buy them way bigger than your dog can ever wrap it's mouth around, and don't leave them unattended!
Some dogs can eat anything and survive it, but I don't want to take the chance and have the million dollar ER vet bill, or worse. Audie- Fiona likes dryer sheets too, but she shreds them, doesn't eat them!

We have a Maggie as well who experienced loneliness when we left. She got to the point where she would chew her body because of her sadness. THe vet was the most convincing person on getting a second dog, so enlist his expertise. He can make a good argument substantiate your want of a second dog....more dogs, more love.

Another reason for 2 dogs....manicures and pedicures. Just finished AM quality time with my dogs. They sit one on each side of me. Maggie showers my hand with kissess, and Sophie adorns my feet with kisses. Where else can I get that treatment 3 or 4 times a day! Unconditional love
