Fox News isn't a news organization..

On Monday, MSNBC's Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow were among several people who attended an off-the-record briefing with Pres. Obama at the White House. Sources tell us other attendees at the two-and-a-half hour chat included Eugene Robinson of the Washington Post, Maureen Dowd of the New York Times, Gwen Ifill of PBS and Gloria Borger of CNN. Perhaps not surprisingly, no one from Fox News was in the room.

This fact quickly turned into ammunition for the folks at FOX. Last night on "Special Report," Bret Baier revealed the information pointing out that opinion hosts from one channel were being invited to a briefing with the Commander-in-Chief, all the while Fox was declared not a news organization.

Maddow/Olbermann Invited to White House Chat with Obama, But Fox Isn't a News Organization? - mediabistro.com: TVNewser

While Maddow and Olberman get front row seats and face time in the White House.

When Obama's term started out, I was really hoping things would change, but really nothing has. In fact I'd argue it's become far worse - the divide continues to widen. What happened to all those promises of transparency? Now we have the White House selectively blacklisting one of the three major cable news networks. I'd be laughing if this wasn't so, incredibly, sad.

I have mixed feelings about this.

There are so many reasons why Fox's "fair and balanced" slogan does not hold up to scrutiny. Taken as a whole the network is absolutely, utterly right leaning and is very often unfair and biased. There are exceptions on the network but this overall attitude does come from the top (Roger Ailes, duh).

Unfortunately, Rupert Murdoch is making a fortune with this approach, and by doing so has quickened the transformation of the 24-hour news channel from something serious (remember? it was, way back in the day) to money-generating entertainment. I'm sure every bit of the Fox method has to do with ratings and psychological manipulation, and very little has to do with ideological purity. But this is what it is -- and MSNBC has absolutely followed suit by leaning way leftward in the past two years, because they figure this is the way to make money in this culture. Everyone on every network has to "brand" themselves, having some take or another.

It isn't fairness, it isn't intelligent, and very little of it is substantive journalism (with a few exceptions).

So Obama is right, though he is wrong to call out just Fox. It is a culture that has been mostly created by Fox, but has spread everywhere. Obama is wasting his time on this stuff and looks petty. It lends credibility to the "whiners" comment. I don't know who is advising him to engage but he should resist. He is "supposed" to be better than this.

Why should the president give Fox News access? Granted they're playing the conservative angle for the money, but this will only help them with that, so it's win win across the board.

The prez isn't obligated to do interviews with Fox anymore than he is your kids school newspaper. And just because they have a lot of viewers by cable news standards doesn't mean they deserve access. If that were the standard the President would be on American Idol doing interviews.

Anyway Fox is tickled to death by this despite pleas to the contrary. All this does is excite the bases of both sides and distract from the real issues our government is botching.

I would throw into the mix of those shows that serve as an exception - Special Report with Bret Baier, which has to be the most honest and up front analyst talk hour on cable. Sheppard Smith's news hour is also straight up.

On the flip side, O'Reilly falls on the side of entertainment, but that really doesn't differ much from what's playing on CNN or MSNBC. Jack Caffery on Cnn, Brown, Maddow, Olberman, etc..

Really, in the end, all news networks have followed suit - they mix opinion entertainment with news. Which begs the question, why is Obama playing the favorites game? (Actually, we probably all know why he plays it, we were just hoping he'd figure out some way to stay above it. No such luck.)

Why should he give access to any news organization? Why doesn't he just blacklist the news media all together? You would prefer he pinpoint those in the media who agree with his views and stick with them? (I'm guessing the answer is.. "yes, that would be good first step.") IMHO, this is america, that doesn't fly.

IMHO the media should not be agreeing or disagreeing, they should just be reporting. That's the true issue and in America, that shouldn't fly. Bush had NBC and Obama has FOX. Too bad the public doesn't have a true, only news source without opinion personalities that many don't understand are not actual journalist.

When you are organizing/promoting protests, calling the President a racist, etc. you should be prepared for a reaction.

Since you like guessing, how many fingers am I holding up?

FOX news is a joke. Very little news. not fair and balanced, more like "fear and imbalance" A person could watch that network all day and learn absolutely nothing worth knowing.

Fishfood ITA with the first sentence of your post here at 3:25 am.

The president does not need to give FoxNews the time of day. NBC's Savannah G. did a nice interview with the president and questioned him about FoxNews.

Great call out. Very true--goes right to the core of Fox Noise's problem. I think they may have to start a bit of introspection on what and how they are reporting things. They are a little TOO invloved in all aspects of the teabagger's movement, the death panel folks, the racist fringe, country music scene, the he-wasn't-born-here lunatics, the bring-guns -to-rally-numbnuts, well you get the picture--Fox owns, supports, and placates these groups wholeheatedly.

No wonder only 1 in 5 describes themselves NOW as Republican!

what a foolish debate. of course they are a real news org. this is part of a large smear campaign and many are taking the bait. and than you have people who hate fox because they're told too by the bomb throwers themselves using slogans like "fox noise" and "faux news"-childish. and those people dont even or never have watched fox. the top 13 news programs are fnc. thats not by accident so ill stick with the majority. there will no doubt be a time where this is laughed upon :idontno:

I agree with the childish part above. It's kinda like MSLSD, etc. Isn't it? Seems like the lowest common denominator is coming out on all sides of the "debate."

we're not talking about me, but way to go on changing the subject. that usually happens when one is not able to debate on substance. this whole thread is amusing. while the rest of the nation sees this for what it is, the left will continue playing their political games. ill sit back, laugh it off and continue living a good, clear thinking life in paradise.

You're right it's not about any of us. I was only AGREEING with you that it is childish to use cheap slogans to describe Fox network. I just happen to think that it is childish to use those tactics to describe any network. It reduces the "debate" to the lowest common denominator of "my news source is better than your news source" instead of discussing the salient points of ANY news story.

I happen to agree that Fox News is no better or worse than any other news organization out there. As a matter of fact, I am on the 30AShopper side of this issue and use Fox news to balance out other news outlets. Actually, I watch very little broadcast or cable news anymore because it is about 10% news and more editorial but there are some good shows on different channels.

I call BS on the whole Fox is not news...

I'll give you Hannity, Beck and even O'Reilly....They are OPINION shows in the same light as Olberman, Maddow, Mathews,

The rest is news.....Like them or not...the ratings don't lie

Oh sure they do. You are trying to say that Roger Ailes is not a master political manipulator? It's about appeal, not the content.

Make no mistake, overall they're not much worse than anyone, and I do catch Shep from time to time, but sadly, the days of straightforward, fair and trusted news and analysis died long before Cronkite actually did.

But again, this is not a battle Obama needs to be fighting, it is laughable, in fact.

ailes is a master political manipulator? you got proof of that other than that olby says so after being fired from ailes for being a loon?

and by the way, shep is a liberal. he just hasnt drank the koolaid. and so is greta, etc.

the facts are available for everything these days. if you dont think fox supplies that, who does? everything fox tells you you can look up on the internet these days and i dont mean on a blog.

you are right though, its a fight the president should not be fighting. he's taken these tactics from his far left pals for decades. only in the modern day these tactics will blow up in this face without a doubt. especially when fox dominates the airwaves.... even my democratic family sees this for what it is and they havent a clue what this president has been or not been doing.

Remember, I don't watch Olby. That line doesn't seem to work too often around here. :idontno: And it is fact that Olby is very hard to work with.

I don't know Ailes personally, but I can't imagine he or anyone is capable of morphing from a sleazy yet highly effective political operative (by ALL accounts) into a guy who just wants to bring fair news to the masses. The mindset of a fair newsman or woman is wholly opposite of someone who worked the way Ailes once worked for political candidates. That is the truth.

For the record, it still makes me wince that Stephanopoulous is host of This Week, even though he has been doing it for years and seems to do a good job. In my mind the high standards should apply to everyone. But they no longer do.

I agree with TFT and others, this wasn't supposed to be a discussion about Fox's opinion shows - they have good shows that lean right, MSNBC has good opinions shows that lean left, CNN has some interesting opinion shows and segments, heck even HBO has a good opinion show in Maer. It's about the fact that the currently administration is blacklisting an entire news network because they present critical reporting. I think it'll backfire on them, and really, they should be above such sillyness.

its quit obvious that many on here are olby zombies judging by their comments ie "fixed news", "faux news" and "fox noise".

ailes is frankly a genius. he saw that the american people werent getting the news in a fair and balanced way and brought it to them and has been very successful in doing so.

stephanopoulous has been getting better and better. he's not the koolaid drinker he used to be, but he also is irresponsible on many levels by not doing the full story. however, ill give him credit for making an attempt. he's a totally different person than he used to be without a doubt. he just doesnt bring the entire story which isnt doing the viewer a service. but, he's certainly not like the loons on msnbc thats for sure.

We'll have agree to disagree on this point. Ailes is a genius from a business perspective, and definitely an opportunist and exploiter. As many have said he does what he has to do to reach a certain goal, ie political victory or ratings success. This is what it takes to be successful in the business world. But that doesn't equate to inherent fairness. The two are not mutually exclusive but they don't intersect all that often either.
