Almost have the boat ready for the lake! Installed the trolling motor today and charging the battery for it now...I just have to buy a bigger chisel so I can hammer out the rusted in blank that is blocking my trucks trailer hitch! lol To bad tomorrow looks like its going to be windy as all get out. Sunday looks to be a go though! If everything is groovy with the boat using the trolling motor, I am going to sink about a grand into it next week for the main outboard, new seats and trim and a new steering cable!

Finally got the rusted in blank stuck in my trailer hitch chiseled out! Took almost two hours...jeez! *rubs sore arm* I hooked it up and drove around the parking lot to get a feel for it. Took me 3 tries to get it parked properly again. All I have to say is I suck backing up with a trailer! lol I think I am going to go scout out the Eastern Lake boat launch now. If I recall, its pretty steep!

Yay! Finally got her on the water for about an hour today! Didn't take on any water as far as I could tell either. I can just imagine anyone living by the boat ramp and watching us try three million times to back it up properly. lol It was way too windy on the lake proper for the little electric trolling motor, so we stuck to the little inlet by the ramp. Imygyn was really nervous at first, but she stuck with me and ended up enjoying herself. I just need to get the main outboard repaired and we have an awesome summer ahead of us!

I so remember the days in another life when I was always the designated trailer backer upper. I sucked at it too--always. I never got the hang of it, but I was generally the most sober of the group.
Looks like you do have some funn days ahead. Happy for you!

So happy for you DTI ! Your baby girl looks excited about boating too. I'm sure you'll get the hang of it soon enough. I've heard people say they have no problem backing with a huge trailer/boat, but can't back a jon boat for nothing.

in my 20's, i was with one of those guys. We had been out on the boat all day and i asked him if he wanted me to back the trailer down. He looked at me and laughed and said
"baby, i hate to break it to you, but you can't back that boat trailer down here" Just a chuckling as he considered it. "But you can try if you want to". :floor:

I went and got the truck, backed the trailer down on the first try. SCORE! A great moment in my history.

DD... me too! I still suck at it!!! Chris always wants me to give it a try. Meanwhile 10 other people are waiting to put their boats in. NOT good! I won't do it anymore. :idontno:

DTI. It was too windy for me to get out today. Did you go out again? Didn't see any boats out this afternoon. Waves were kicking on the lake. My wonderful 90+ year old neighbor said the sand was really blasting on the beach.

No, it was way too windy. I learned my lesson yesterday, as my little electric trolling motor had issues on the lake proper with the wind as bad as it has been. I think tomorrow is supposed to be windy as well Looks like next weekend might be better!

Aw, come on, DL! The Weasel and I kayaked down to the Gulf yesterday--it was fabulous out! The wind was, indeed, a little windy once you got down there, though!

I can just imagine anyone living by the boat ramp and watching us try three million times to back it up properly. lol...

Lesson #1...Start with the trailer as straight to where you want to go as you can even if it means hauling it to Freeport to line it up!

Lesson #2...Put your hand on the bottom of the steering wheel. Which ever way you push the wheel from the bottom is the way the trailer will go.

Lesson #3...Make your corrections small and then stop them by adding in the same amount of wheel in the opposite direction.

You can do it!

This thread makes me smile. Some of my most cherished memories are of getting up way before dawn with my daddy and going fishing. He had a bass boat that he taught me how to back up and launch. It was usually just the two of us, so I learned early on how to back up a trailer. He eventually moved up to a pontoon boat, that I had learned to back up and launch as well. I miss those days.

Enjoy every minute of that time with your sweet little girl DTI, before long she will not want to "hang" with daddy. ;-) I sure wish I had hung with mine more instead of doing other things as I got older......

Next time it should only take me 20 or so tries to back it up! lol I think I forgot to mention that when I finally had it all lined up and ready to put in the water, Imy let me know she had to go to the bathroom! We had to pack it all up, drive home and use the bathroom and then come back and start from scratch!

Please do come say hi SWGB!

Ps. Thanks for the advice Singingchicken! I will try that next time. :D

So much fun to read this. Is it not the best to take your boat out with your little pooky? She is a doll and even though I don't know you I feel your excitement. Have a wonderful spring/summer/fall with your boat. You are a lucky guy!

Went out for 3 hours today! Forgot sunblock or it would have been longer. lol I upgraded the electric trolling motor to a 40 pound thrust and variable speed and had much better results. Also purchased a new marine deep cycle battery and only dented it by about 10 percent for quite a bit of use. I really need to get the outboard repaired soon, and then we can really get crazy! Imy is completely used to the boat now and isn't nervous anymore and I was able to launch the boat in roughly half the time as my last attempt! Thanks for all of the advice as it looks like I might get the hang of it within the next 10 or so launches! lol;-)
