Whole fruits. Well, upfront costs will be higher, but she will be teaching children. Doing the right thing is not always the cheapest route. She may save her kids from having a heart attack at age 38. :idontno: If we all did this and it spread as rapidly as cancer, we would have lower health care costs and insurance premiums, thereby potentially saving ten fold, rather than buying crap food.
I am speaking from a junk food junkie kid's point of view. Growing up I ate crap food, only because I had the option. Today, I still eat some crap foods, but I think if I had grown up eating healthy foods, I would be in much better health today as well as in the future. ;-)
Our regular diet, breakfast, lunch and dinner is very nutritious, and I was the mean mom who never bought Fun Fruits, Lunchables and other disgusting processed food.
But no way was I going to make junk food a completely forbidden fruit (pun intended!) in our household. That was how two of my best friends were raised and they struggled with their weight all during their teenage/young adult years.
If a parent consistantly models the correct behavior, kids *eventually* follow it.
But every teenager likes a bit of junk food; and a lot of American 18 year olds, no matter how skinny they are at high school graduation, gain the Freshman Forty while living in the dorm.
Beach Runner mentioned that her daughter cooks with her; we do this too.
BTW
There is nothing junky about plain popcorn. It may not be the same as wholegrain bread or organic cheese, but it is fun to eat, tastes good, and does no great harm as a late afternoon snack.

That's what I was thinking..I was thinking along the lines of Easy Mac. My son love's this stuff, easy and fast!!!! I know, I know not that nutricious, but it is fine in a pinch!!!!!
Love me some mac!!! pasta is always the answer to any problem, IMO.
the other night, after getting home from the beach very late (after sunset) and several wines, I made some yummy fresh tomato sauce with pasta - kirky refers to this as my "drunk pasta". kind of like drunk dialing. but drunk pasta cooking. but let's not feed our teenagers drunk pasta, or maybe this is the answer. I don't know - I have many years before I have to figure that one out.

Maybe you're right: Pasta is the answer (no matter what the question!)
We always have some mac 'n cheese in the house, yeah it's totally reconstituted crud but when I read the label it does not look carcinogenic.
Both my brothers and both my sons went through a Top Ramen stage, as well.
I just try not to think about the sodium content.
And have some more drunk fresh tomato pasta. ;-)

put a jar on the kitchen counter, every kid gets to pay a dollar a day to eat. not too much of a sting to their pocket, and helps defray cost.Lol...now, that's a good one..... :rolling:
