Many of you guys know that sunshine is a rescue dog. She's perfect in everyway, almost. She has tremendous separation anxiety. She somehow hurt her foot Wednesday. My neighbor told me last night that when I was gone on Wednesday that she sat in the window screaming for 6 hours non-stop while I had to go to a meeting in PCB.

I take her everywhere I can but this is the third time a neighbor has told me that she screeches when I'm gone. I think she probably hurt foot falling off the window sill because that night is when the foot swelling and hopping started.

I have bought her a doll, a blanket. The cat is here with her when I'm gone but she just freaks when I leave her in the house. We don't know much about her history, so I'm beginning to think she was left in a house during the storm or maybe abandoned by the roadside when they couldn't take their pets on the bus during Katrina.

Tonight I went out and my friends brought their pug to babysit her. when we got home we got out of the car at the end of the street so she wouldn't see the car drive up and we could listen to see if she was yelling. While she wasn't screaming, she was sitting looking out the front door when we walked around the corner. Then we go through the "she's home" freaking out, running around me wanting to be picked up and it doesn't stop until I pick her up and hold her close until her little pounding heart stops pounding.

I really don't feel I can commit to another dog right now and have resisted putting her in a cage when I'm gone. Has anyone else had such problems with separation anxiety and found a solution without drugging the pet? I just dont know what to do and now she's getting so upset that she's hurting herself. Any suggestions would be great.

I Love you guys the most! good to feel needed.

OK, my little angel couldn't be less interested in the kongs, the peanust butter or the treats  She only wants me! My mom keeps on insisting that she's spoiled but I fear that jdarg is right. Definitely wasn't in the plans to have 2 and apparently a cat won't do! Don't even know how I could handle 3 pets in my little car as often as I go to Tampa bay. OK back to brainstorming guys.

Looks like I'm gonna have to get a handbag where she won't be detected for some occasions. She is very quiet in her carry bag so I think that she can go more places than I might normally take her. For those times when taking her isn't possible, do the poop scoop people babysit and how much is that gonna set me back? Someone was mentioning sedating her last night. I'm soooo against that but am open for any thoughts at this point. Lisa (House of Art) has kindly offered to sit for Sunshine when needed (I'm sure Gordy will love that!) Maybe once in a while during the day, she could visit Lola and Lisa. We need a pet daycare around here or am the only loony toons with this problem :idontno:

Just had chat with mom and dad who have 2 dogs at their place and they said as soon as I leave, she jumps onto the window sill and starts yelling and the only way she shuts up is if they scold her and make her lay down. They also said when we left her inside with my mom's shelties and went outside to talk to some workman that she was screaming at the window which I now recall too. My mom and I walked next door tonight and my dad stayed here with Sunshine, he says she started yelling until he made her go lay down. :idontno: This is really quite a puzzle.

Was talking to IBD last night and she said she heard a dog screaming all day and then read this thread the next day and felt so bad. I know she's got to sound horrible. IBD was about a block and half away and could hear her so in addition to the stress on Sunshine, I can't subject my neighbors to that. Definitely gonna need to come up with a solution for sure

Cork,

I am aghast! She did not take to the Kongs? Oh my gosh. That blows me away, because I thought every dog thinks with either their stomach or their heart, depending on what's in front of them. Did you play with them and make them into a game? With my baby, I would fill one and then walk around the house with it, making her follow me-it was a great training tool, I tell you. Then once I gave it to her, she'd practically attack it. It was a great distractor for her. And to tell you the truth, she's 8 years old now and sometimes I still fill her Kong as I'm leaving, to keep from having to look at those big brown eyes.

My suggestion is to try the Kong again when you are there, not when you are getting ready to leave. She's smart and knows when you are getting to walk out the door. Other than that, I'm sorry I suggested the Kongs to you and they didn't work! A little carry bag for her would work for sure, but will you always be able to do that? There has to be some times when you will have to leave her, isn't there? :idontno:

Give Sunshine a belly rub from me, Cork! You girls will work it out somehow!

We have a little Shih Tzu (Jasper) and he's quite the barker. We figured
out several things to let the pupster know that incessant barking is not acceptable.

The best path for us is to keep Jasper busy. Since dogs love chewing we provide him with chew hooves, pig ears, Lambeez, Nylabones, dental rope, and Hill's Canine T/D. It is working very well. The Lambeez is for
little dogs and I think is fairly new. Hills Canine T/D is a nutritional food but we give it as a treat because it is a dental aid besides we feed him an all natural diet. The T/D pieces are about the size of a marshmallow and our little pup loves them and the size is no problem. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/

Jasper doesn't like the Kong unless it has cheese in it or pieces of hot dog. Try it, might work.

We 'wear him out' playing chase the ball, squirrel, fox tail, whatever. It doesn't take much - about 15/20 minutes to get him tuckered out. We had an English Springer Spaniel before the Shih Tzu and believe me you cannot wear out a Springer! Phew!

We got some chain link at Lowe's and put it in one of those Crown Royal pouches. What does this have to do with a barking dog? Learned it from Bark Buster's. When the dog barks or misbehaves, you throw the pouch down and growl. The sound of the chain link on the floor sounds like dogs snapping to the pup's ear. It works miracles. We had to stitch around the chain link bundle so it would not fly out of the pouch. The chain link pouch is not a toy and you musn't let pup play with it. It takes a little time but we decided we would not live with a tyrant beastie. Good luck to you and your little sweetie.

Yes, the cream. I have a feeling she's gonna love it. First try will be tonight! I didn't even notice but when I did the crate thing, apparently she was shoving her pointy little nose into the holes because her nose peeled for 3 days afterwards. She's her happy self again and she's gonna love meeting all the dogs at Grayton. Hope I get there in time 😱

Let me know when you're in town. Can't wait to meet up!

Cork, any new news with Sunshine? I see where she got to go to Amore Pizza Monday night! Lucky Dog:floor:

We are arriving in Sowal in 7 days, with Halle and Heidi in tow. I don't believe we will be taking them out to restaurants, though. Halle is 56 pounds and just a little high-strung:rofl: and Heidi is 16 years old and just wants to sleep and go potty, it seems!
