The Tea Party: good or bad for Republicans?

Tea Party Caucus Puts Republicans in the Hot Seat

A lot of Republicans have been paying lip service to the Tea Party movement, but with November on the horizon, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann says that it's time to get more serious. Without warning top GOP brass, last week Bachmann set up the Tea Party caucus?the movement's first congressional institution. Now, the Tea Party darling wants to know who's going to join it. Indiana Rep. Mike Pence is in, Politico says, but Minority Leader John Boehner doesn't want anything to do with it, and Virginia Rep. Eric Cantor is still on the fence. The caucus, Politico speculates, threatens to put GOPers in a tricky situation. By forcing Republicans to formalize their relationship to the controversial movement, the caucus could alienate moderate voters and become a "loaded political weapon for Republicans heading into the midterm elections." This, perhaps, is why Democratic leaders congratulated Bachmann on the move. With the help of Sarah Palin, Bachmann has become one of the movement's rising stars and is helping it gain credibility in the eyes of the public. According to a new Politico poll, thanks in part to Bachmann, nearly a quarter of the public thinks that the movement "will become a viable third party in American politics."

Andy will you tell me more about your black friends and teach me to be non judgemental like you? Oh, and define all those things in bold type for me please.

Poppy, I know Andy responded to you. But NO ONE needs to tell YOU about their black friends and no one needs to try to teach you anything. I feel that you have already "been formed" .

Geo, she is only one member of the Tea Party. There are hundreds of thousands of us, now, and no, we are not just Republicans, we are concerned citizens. Every political group has those not liked by many and those adored by many. The generalizations I made in an earlier post need no explanation if you are in the least bit intelligent. They are pretty self evident and all on SoWal can figure them out if they wish to do so.

Lucifer ...you are real a piece of work as my grama use to say...you sure do put yourself high up there on that judgement ladder, calling folks and groups ignorant and deplorable. Keep making your snide little remarks and when your ladder topples don't let it hit your backside on the way down.:sarc:

Gramma, where you're going, the last thing you have to worry about is falling ladders.

Poppy, I'll be happy to tell you more about my black friends. One of my closest buddies I flew with is black. We've been friends for 40 years. Right now, I'm sitting next to a little girl who is mad at me because I won't let her on this computer. (She is on her own but wants on this one...you know how 12 year old grandkids are) My other two grand daughters are also around here somewhere. All three of them are half African-American (a term I hate by the way...why can't we just be Armerican?). Now, maybe you can tell me about your black friends?
As far as being non judgemental, I totally realize I am anything but, and proud of it. Oh, and if I need to define all those things in bold type for you, you are not nearly as bright as I gave you credit for being.

I can't tell you the ethnic background of my friends because I have never ask them. The reason I ask you to define the things in bold type is because you claimed I'm not familiar with them so familiarize me.

If I end up with you Sonny, you will be wishing and praying that I'd climb that ladder to the Golden Gates. You know that old Meatloaf song, "Praying for the end of Time" ? Enough said.

YouTube - TEA PARTY RACISM: What The Media Won't Show You About Teabagger Racism

I love a good movie but not one made up of photoshopped images of vile posters that were supposely at a Tea party group. If these images were moving and I could hear the hate chants of the crazed tea party folks...then you might have something here Bob.

Here is an image for you too.

I have attended several Tea Party events and have yet to see anything racist. Anyone who is against this administration is labeled a racist. So much for uniting the Country, liberals are trying to further divide us.

As current policy changes trickle into effect more and more people are going to voice their outrage. Do liberals even know what racism is? Pro Christianity is not racist...

My recollection is that it was the liberals at the forefront of the civil rights movement of the 1960s that resulted in an end to segregation in the US. The Catholic priest, Rev. Philip Berrigan, was a prominent leader in that movement. Many of the black leaders were Christian ministers.

Glenn Beck says he truly believes the President is a racist who has a "deep-seated hatred of white people." Glenn says that he [Beck] is the one trying to move forward Martin Luther King's vision of a color-blind America.

I'm glad to hear Tea Party members renounce racism.

Kumbaya, y'all.

The complete list of the 21 Democrats who opposed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 includes Senators:

- Hill and Sparkman of Alabama
- Fulbright and McClellan of Arkansas
- Holland and Smathers of Florida
- Russell and Talmadge of Georgia
- Ellender and Long of Louisiana
- Eastland and Stennis of Mississippi
- Ervin and Jordan of North Carolina
- Johnston and Thurmond of South Carolina
- Gore Sr. and Walters of Tennessee
- H. Byrd and Robertson of Virginia
- R. Byrd of West Virginia

Democrat opposition to the Civil Rights Act was substantial enough to literally split the party in two. A whopping 40% of the House Democrats VOTED AGAINST the Civil Rights Act, while 80% of Republicans SUPPORTED it. Republican support in the Senate was even higher. Similar trends occurred with the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which was supported by 82% of House Republicans and 94% of Senate Republicans. The same Democrat standard bearers took their normal racists stances, this time with Senator Fulbright leading the opposition effort.

It took the hard work of Republican Senate Minority Leader Everett Dirksen and Republican Whip Thomas Kuchel to pass the Civil Rights Act (Dirksen was presented a civil rights accomplishment award for the year by the head of the NAACP in recognition of his efforts).

Upon breaking the Democrat filibuster of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, Republican Dirksen took to the Senate floor and exclaimed "The time has come for equality of opportunity in sharing in government, in education, and in employment. It will not be stayed or denied. It is here!"

Sadly, Democrats and revisionist historians have all but forgotten (and intentionally so) that it was Republican Dirksen, not the divided Democrats, who made the Civil Rights Act a reality. Dirksen also broke the Democrat filibuster of the 1957 Civil Rights Act that was signed by Republican President Eisenhower.
