Have the terrorists achieved their aims?

The theory behind terrorism is that random violent acts can enable David to beat Goliath.

With a few random violent acts Al-Qaeda has caused us to
(1) abandon our long-standing disavowal of preemptive war (vs. Iraq)
(2) abrogate our Constitutional guarantees of privacy & freedom from unreasonable search & seizure (the ?Patriot? Act)
(3) decide that accused terrorists can be held indefinitely without bringing them to trial; they don't have to be told the charges against them, nor shown the evidence against them, and, in some cases, it's ok to torture them
(4) argue about whether Muslims deserve freedom of religion.

Have the terrorists achieved their aims?

I fail to see how that falls in the category of xenophobia. Hysteria maybe. Do you have a point and is your comment relevant?

I think it exactly supported your comment that
The attacks caused some people to rationalize and verbalize their fears which are born of ignorance.

What party confuses you? Do you think her comments are not related to the attacks or are not born of fears and ignorance?

No people conjure up government conspiracies all the time and have been doing so for years. It's as if there is no stigma attached to it. The events of 9/11did little to bring that out. Animosity towards the government is ubiquitous from all parties and walks of life. I see no comparison whatsoever between what you're saying and the point I was trying to make.

I agree. I read back over some of Ugabuga's posts to see if I could find one that justified the comments and I could not.
...
It wasn't so much this thread, but almost everyday, ugabuga posts some political slant thread. This one was one of his less slanted ones, but his comments are still slanted and seem intent on raising controversy.

This is the political board. The controversy is built in.

good point, lucifer, but if I guess I should avoid it since much of it is regurgitation of what I can see on the nightly CNN or FOX news channels.

Here's an original thought regarding the thread question: Maybe it wasn't the goal of the "terrorists" to divided the country. Maybe there goal was to kill all the non-believers.

They do not want to divide us, they want to destroy us.

Well, if, as you appear to believe there has been a 'pent up' xenophobia in the nation then it isn't much different. Just as the folks with the 'pent up' xenophobia are using 9/11 as the excuse for releasing their tirades, the conspirators do as well.

I don't seem much difference. In general, weak, ill-informed (dare I say stupid) people are always looking for someone else to blame things on.

As an aside, I question that a sample size of 2 is a reasonable basis for determining that the nation has a 'pent up' xenophobia. I only had a few years of statistics in college, but I am pretty sure that sample size is too small.

This nation was founded and made great by immigrants and I would be surprised if very many people in the country truly have an unreasonable fear or hatred of foreigners or strangers. I think that there is a large and rapidly growing antipathy towards people who come here illegally but I don't think that 9/11 has much at all to do with that.

It wasn't a sample. It's an example to highlight what I'm talking about. I can't count the number of times I heard similar discussions from people who I onece even considered to be friends. They are no longer friends, and the loss is theirs.

If that's their goal, they have their work cut out for them. I don't think anybody is about to give up bacon, beer, gratuitous sex, masturbation, pornography etc., you know, the stuff that makes life worth living.

It's much more than that. They don't want females to be educated. They want to kill alleged adulterers. They don't want people to be free thinkers. They want to enforce the ways set many years ago. I say screw 'em (al queda).

Religion and borders have separated people for many years, and nothing is different today. "My way" is always best.

There is no question that as a nation we can't let anything like that happen. We have to battle any kind of violent fundamentalism in our borders. I think our country can handle it.

Please remember that the "they" is the Taliban, not all Muslims.

Muslims do not prevent women from being educated and make them cover their faces, extremists do.

Was it not good enough to write "Al Qaeda" in ( ) in my post about the subject? :idontno: I thought this thread was about "terrorists" not Muslims.

Pornography and masturbation go hand in hand (no pun intended), so it's neither of those. Everybody loves bacon. There's no substitute for gratuitous sex, but there are lots of ways to get alcohol into your system, so I would say beer.

Oh great now you've done it. This will morph into a new fear for the right, a government ban on masturbation. I can see it now "Obama forms jerk off panel".
