Due to recent events at work I'm thinking of becoming a mobile auto mechanic. I'm looking to see what everyone thinks of the idea.

i haven't seen many cars break down at the auto mechanic's shop.
Makes perfect sense to be mobile if you have all the tools.

I have plenty of tools to do any job, with the exception of body work. Anything mechanical or electrical I can handle

Dwight, tell me about what's going on with your car or truck and let's get a time figured out to fix your vehicle

My only concern would be warranty issues/accountability if there is a problem down the road, but would love to not have to take the time to go somewhere and get my oil changed.

My labor would carry a one year 12k warranty and the parts come with the same. If I make a mistake I will be accountable for it

The idea is the same as a doctor making a house call. You could schedule to the customer's needs either at home or at work. The idea is sound and could be very prosperous. Good luck!

My plan is to cater to the customers needs, if I need to show up at the customers home or at their work I can do both

I would think you will need a CC swipe machine and a merchant account because yours is a great idea. Plus, it will help reel in those cash discounts ;-)

lol... well let me tell you about my '97 Firebird..... Absolutely I believe you are needed.. reliable, dependable... 24/7? Can you tow? I see daily cars along 98 between 395 and 331.... yesterday there were 3!!!

If you can tow.. and do the repair, you will have a gem... If you cannot tow (yet) I'm sure you will be able to incorporate that feature too in the future...

For now, yes you are needed.. my place or yours? lolz

Great - the Scootermobile will be needing an oil change in late Sept/early October!

I have NEVER heard of an auto mechanic making house calls but it sounds like a really good idea! Do you know others who do this, here or elsewhere? I would try to find out as much as possible about the potential, problems, etc. If you are an excellent mechanic offering prompt and reliable service - I don't know how you could possibly go wrong... good luck TJ and keep us posted!!!

the only thing I can think of is that you might have more work than you could schedule...good luck.

I'm just wondering what kind of lifts you have, what kind of truck, what kinds of tools? You might need a large vehicle to haul all the equipment you might need. At least a garage is in the shade. You can't count on that when you make house-calls. I'm sure you can work it out.

I have family in atlanta where there are quite a bit of mobile auto mechanics. Some have been around for a long time some did not last very long. I believe that being honest and fair is going to make this idea work out.

i have two different trucks, a 02 chevy s-10 zr-2, and i have access to a ford f-250 diesel. two trailors, one 16ft and one 18ft. i have no lift right now, but i have jack stands, i have a mixture of snap-on, mac, matco and craftsmans tools. as well as an air compressor to operate my air tools.

I think there's a lot to be said for the idea. I have no need right now, but one thing that would help I think is if you're willing to work weekends. First off, a lot of the repair shops are closed on the weekends. The other thing is, on weekends, a lot of people don't need their car for work and they're at home. It really sucks when you have to take your car in during the week (or any time for that matter). How nice to be able to cut the grass on a Saturday while somebody rotates your tires and changes the oil.

im more than willing to work on weekends, kind of goes with the idea of a being 24/7 towing service too. I forgot to add this in the original post but im not limited to just cars and trucks, i can work on motorcycles, scooters, ATVs, and anything in between

Tire mounting would be a great service. Just giving you ideas.

You are correct. The thing with tire mounting/balancing is that I would need two different machines. Both cost about 10k each. Although I do have the abilty to use those machines at a independent shop in the area
