Due to recent events at work I'm thinking of becoming a mobile auto mechanic. I'm looking to see what everyone thinks of the idea.

This would also be a great service for tourists! I am sure there are some who need auto mechanic assistance while they are here or in Destin. How cool would it be for them to have the service come to them and fix their car while on vacation...it would be a relief, I am sure.

TillerJeff, you know my clan has been encouraging you to spread your wings and strike out on your own. The business is there, you are amazing at what you do, you have boundless energy.....do you need a $$$ backer?? LOL

TJ has worked on Hummie, KaBuelah (Kabota RTV) the Jeep, my boat, the worn out treadmill, and my trailer!!!! Maybe even the lawn tractor.....he can do so much I can't keep up.

Jeff, you will do just fine.

I think the possibility of success question has been answered. Getting the word out so that you have enough income to replace what you had will be a bit more work.

Business cards should be a first step. Sowal will help alot. Eventually word of mouth will go a long way with locals who know you.

Get the business cards in front of the sheriff and highway patrols who stop to check on broke down travelers and now they have a source to get them rolling again without having to be towed or an overnighter in a strange town.

I think it is a great idea and know of others that would use your service as well as myself.

I used a mobile mechanic for my cycle earlier this year. If you've got references, and don't charge $85.00 an hr, plus tax, word of mouth will get you more business than you'll dream of. And, I would call when needed. Get some business cards handed out.

Hey Tiller,

My dad has been an Auto Mechanic for pretty much all of his life. He had his own business for 26 years (in another state) and recently closed it down to retire.
He is an honest and reliable person and his business grew tremendously!
Now he has decided to open another shop next to there home and already has a waiting list.
My point being, if your honest, don't rip people off, and stand behind your work
you should do pretty well.
Cars will always break. You, like the medical profession, will always be needed.
Good luck to you!

Aleigh, the fuel pump for your firebird is about $350. Sorry it took so long to get back with you as the fuel pump in my truck went out as well.

Tillerjeff, can you fix the horn and cruise? I have a feeling this issue is somehow related and I really like to use both.....sometimes at the same time.

do look at insurance-in case you are injured on the job or in case you are working on a $$$ vehicle and some one tries to say something happened to it. maybe spend a few bucks incorporating so any assets (tools) don't get taken if you get sued-even great mechanics, doctors etc get sued on occasion. i'm sure someone on the board can reccomend a reasonable possiblity. i've seen too many good businessess like yours fail due problems with contingency planning. if some one here doesn't speak up the county or community college probably has a small business group that could give you a little advice on a business plan if you need it for the insurance.
good luck and just in case do you have any training on hybrids?
