Petraeus Condemns U.S. Church's Plan to Burn Qurans - WSJ.com
KABUL?The top U.S. commander in Afghanistan said the planned burning of Qurans on Sept. 11 by a Florida church could put the lives of American troops in danger and damage the war effort.
Gen. David Petraeus said the Taliban would exploit the demonstration for propaganda purposes, drumming up anger toward the U.S.
"It is precisely the kind of action the Taliban uses and could cause significant problems. Not just here, but everywhere in the world we are engaged with the Islamic community."

If it was the last of the remaining Korans being burned, I'd stand up and fight, but if I can go online and quickly pull the entire book, it doesn't immediately have value as a book. It isn't rare or anything.
Symbolically, it may have "value," but not to those who are burning it. In reality, the burning of the books should not upset anyone who is saying that people should not be able to protest the mosque in NYC. Don't get hypocritical.

Burning the koran or bible may be disrespectful to our Constitution, but I see many people crapping on the Constitution every day. What's new? The Constitution gives us the ability to burn such things if we want. Society, on the other hand, has a way of controlling those things on a local level.

They have every right to do it, the copies belong to them and they can do with them what they want.
But this is as perfec ant illustration of an UN-CHRISTIAN act as I have seen lately. Jesus said "Do unto others as you would have them do to you." These people would scream bloody murder if someone burned a Bible. The world would be alot better place if people who called themselves Christian would act like one.
Maybe we should take a road trip down there on the day they plan to do it and burn a few bibles across the street? I'm game. Lets toss a few Korans in there too, for good measure.

I don't think anybody should be burning bibles but it doesn't bother me personally. I'm more disturbed that you could end up on a hit list for doing so. It hasn't been that way in the USA however, and we need to keep it that way. Zero tolerance for violence due to religious fundamentalism anywhere on Earth, but particularly within our hemisphere. I don't buy it that blasphemy is like shouting "fire" in a public place. An actual fire can't be ignored and must be acted upon. It's imperative. Can't say the same for blasphemy and the hurt feelings that result.

AndrewG, your last paragraph is precisely the viewpoint of atheists living in our religious world...
Yes and I completely support their decision so long as it is of their own choosing.

They (the Christian Church) ALL need to start paying taxes if they want to move any of their political agenda(s) forward....
the "christian" church is the only church that doesn't pay taxes?

Sorry, but burning someone's holy religious text is extreme. It's on par with vandalizing a house of worship. I find neither act to be acceptable behavior - even if one is protesting.
If Muslims were burning Bibles and vandalizing churches it would be news too.
who is burning mosques?
I disagree, and the difference between burning one's own book and vandalizing a house of worship is ownership. Even burning someone else's book isn't on par with burning a place of worship. This is all being blown out of proportion and takes away focus from real problems in the USA.

Tennessee mosque site fire an arson, feds say – CNN Belief Blog - CNN.com Blogs
A fire last weekend at the construction site of a future mosque in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, has been determined to be arson, a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives spokesman said Friday.
Lab reports indicate that accelerants were used to start and spread the fire, which destroyed an earth mover and damaged three other vehicles at the future site of the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro, ATF spokesman Eric Kehn said

I think the U.S. is tiptoeing around the Muslim issues for whatever reason and needs to get a clue that they are not going to be able to control legal individual actions no matter how inappropriate (building Mosque around ground zero and preacher guy burning the Koran). You can find anything on the internet to promote whatever propaganda your into... la la la la la
Trying to subdue a nation into one belief system and way of doing things is impossible. We are in a free society which means we will not always agree with our fellow man. We need to quit bending over backwards to please the Muslim people, they are no more, no less, the citizens that we are and we need to quit fearing what one individual (preacher) feels he should do.

If this was someone burning Korans to call attention to Muslim fanatics killing people for drawing political cartoons or protesting gender inequality/domestic violence issues within Islamic culture then I would be more understanding.
But this is just a case of ignorant religious nuts stirring up trouble with other religious nuts so-
I view it as nothing more than an example of the price we must pay for free speech.

We've heard Pastor Jones talk about "standing up to Islam".... but why take a stand here, when most of the Muslims are over there? Let's all take up a collection to fly Pastor Jones and his flock to Iraq and Afganistan where they can burn their Qurans to their hearts' delight.
I think we can all agree that we'd rather see him and his band of religious douchebags suffer the consequences for their actions rather than our sons and daughters in uniform over there. If he doesn't agree to go, then he's obviously a coward who wants young people to take the heat for his actions while he sits in his comfortable little ----hole of a "church" in Gainsville.

I must admit that if this were a Christian Bible burning, this probably wouldn't be on anybody's radar screen, and that's how it should be.

We agree on something. I must be making an impact on your way of thinking.
