Petraeus Condemns U.S. Church's Plan to Burn Qurans - WSJ.com
KABUL?The top U.S. commander in Afghanistan said the planned burning of Qurans on Sept. 11 by a Florida church could put the lives of American troops in danger and damage the war effort.
Gen. David Petraeus said the Taliban would exploit the demonstration for propaganda purposes, drumming up anger toward the U.S.
"It is precisely the kind of action the Taliban uses and could cause significant problems. Not just here, but everywhere in the world we are engaged with the Islamic community."

I know. With our freedoms, this is most definitely a Classic Catch-22. Personally, I say, "Full steam ahead." Terrorists and their followers are pathetic, spineless cowards. We should never bow down to them, succumb to their demands or give them an inch to destroy our Constitution and freedom........regardless of the issues or threats they toss our way. The nice Muslims who want to live here need to giddy up to the way we respect all and that is a two way street.
the extremists are a threat no matter how respectful we are of them.

Is it really a Koran?
My understanding has always been that a Koran is not a Koran unless it in the original Aramaic. Here is mention of that fact in a Newsweek article:
As a kid, my Parent's church had copies of the Torah and the Koran, but both were in English as no one read Hebrew or Aramaic. There was some material in Greek, but I think a lot of seminary students learned Greek in those days.
I'd be surprised if this little rinky-dink church has a copy in Aramaic.
Its interesting that the media chooses to totally ignore this.

For the same reason, translations of the Qur'an are never considered authentic.

We have a volunteer military - they chose to enlist. We choose to continue fighting the elusive terrorists on their land. In a free society, there are many choices and with those choices come respective responsibility and accountability. Likewise, our media chooses to cover events all the time, which can be detrimental to themselves as well as others. Plain crazy, isn't it?Something that no one has mentioned is that according to Buzz's link to the Islamic news site, the pastor has received more than 100 death threats since announcing his plan to burn the Korans. Where is the outcry? Probably won't get any, even though what he is doing is completely legal, though socially unacceptable in most everyone's opinion. :idontno:

Is anyone surprised at all that our media does not report news, but rather chooses the path of sensationalism?
I didn't know the Koran had to be in Aramaic to be official - learn something new everyday.

The Quran is similar to the Bible in that there are many printings, translations (over 100 languages), and formats.
However, most Muslims own either partially or fully translated Qurans and there are rules for how to properly treat those - even for how to properly dispose of cheap worn out copies in English.
And while I totally disagree with burning books and discriminating, (and think many people involved need to be slapped upside the head), I in no way think violence is justified.
Which is why it is my daily goal to piss off the Taliban - not by stooping to their level and giving them more ammunition to use against us, but by promoting tolerance and education, especially of women.

The media perhaps would have ignored it if there had not been so much hysteria stirred up by demagouges.

Everything our country does increases the risks for our troops. I'd be more concerned about our government's actions than some small time preacher. As Lynnie says, getting the soldiers out of there would be a better way to reduce the risk. Instead, we have to go around and be politically correct and not say anything because extremists may take it the wrong way.
Is this preacher's actions wrong? It sure feels wrong, but hey, go watch the video of the beheading of Daniel Pearl and you will get some perspective of the scale of burning a book vs beheading people. Both are deemed to be actions by extremists, but there is a big difference between the two.
I agree. The fact that some don't have perspective here baffles me.

But, for those who do and in their own way in this country, it is their right and I respect them for their belief and their feelings no matter if I agree with their actions or not.

Honestly, I think it's assumed he would. Peaceful Muslims don't get in the way of their fellow murderous extremist. They never have.

Just so you know. My views on these issues haven't changed a bit, it's just that certain things have finally reared their head.
Mine have not changed either, although on this issue I think my views are close to yours. That said, if I think you are right I will say it no matter what we disagree about elsewhere. I do not shill for any party or politician, I only look for answers and state what I believe.

They are so anathema to what I think is important that it is seriously a daily goal of mine to thwart them.

As opposed to all the other moderates who always declaim their religion's extremists.

Interesting that most Republicans were very slow to come out against the Koran burning, or at best, or publically "nuetral" on the subject....
Sadly, I guess they don't want their fringe constituents to be offended by anyone putting a stop to this, especially with election coming up.

I hear you, I just want to be clear that I am against hate talk against peaceful Muslims, but have an even bigger problem with violent religious extremism by Muslims. You can substitute any religion or non-religion you want in that statement.

This did not become an issue until the General came out against it. Then conservatives responded.
The big issues are jobs, government spending, the deficit, big government and taxes. Hopefully we can keep our eyes on the ball.
