I struggle to find the compromise on tax cuts

Obama urges Democrats to support tax cut deal (I've tried to delete a lot of rhetoric.)

President Obama on Tuesday defended the deal he reached with Republicans on extending a broad range of expiring tax cuts, saying he did not want Americans to be harmed while he engages in a long-term political fight with the GOP.
Obama held a hastily arranged news conference to answer questions on the agreement struck late Monday.

Vice President Biden went to Capitol Hill to sell the agreement to Democrats who played no part in reaching a compromise Obama said he struck because Republicans would not budge.
....
Seeking to mollify angry Democrats, Obama vowed to fight further extensions of tax cuts for the wealthy when they expire in two years under the proposal being considered by Congress.

I understand the desire to not hold back unemployment benefits to settle the tax issue, but I can't figure out what the GOP compromised on.

Don't get me wrong. I think a government where our leaders actually negotiated in good faith and compromised on issues in a statemanlike way would be wonderful.

I just don't see it....

The GOP caved in and let Obama cut Social Security by 4%

Actually it was cut from 6.2% to 4.2% for one year to make up for the Make Work Pay Tax Credit expiring.

It's simply a f**ked-up system where the minority party can call a halt to all legislation, no matter it's popularity or merit, by an insane "rule" called fillibuster. Enough said...

I agree and what really angers me is that too many of the "regular people" that the president is standing up for and doing the "right" thing for (despite the disapproval of his so called base), are the very same people who are ridiculing him; not voting for him; and not supporting the policies he has pushed through for them. :bang:

Which regular people are you talking about? It seems like voting amongst the middle class was rather even and the lower class was heavily Obama.

Most of these cuts and credits fall on democratic side of the isle, so I'm not sure why democrats are so bent out of shape.

60 billion in unemployment benefits
120 billion in payroll cuts which target regressive payroll taxes
400 billion in extended 2001 & 2003 tax cuts for lower and middle class earners
40 billion in extended stimulus tax credits targeted at low and middle income earners
extension of various stimulus tax credits for small businesses

on the revenue side, an increase in the estate and/or gift tax

Dems just got their second 900 billion in stimulus, the concession was it was crafted as tax cuts and credits rather than spending, which is good.

I think democrats are just a little shell shocked. They don't get to design these things autonomously anymore, they actually have to work with the other side...

Really, it was republicans, especially the balanced budget types, who will have to make the biggest concession on this.

Colbert pointed out that the rich are really not getting any more tax breaks than the the ones they have had for the last nine years, so exactly what new money are they going to use to "create all those new jobs" that they claim they are going create. The Republicant hostage-taking pretty much sunk the ship. Good night folks.

I'm talking about the latest election...especially in Florida.

The employer doesn't get the 2% drop too?

LVT - I am a small business owner. I have been wanting to hire two new employees but have been on hold waiting to see whether I was going to have to use the money I've saved to pay for taxes or whether I was going to get to keep the money to invest back into my business. I've been interviewing for the past few months so I would be ready to hire in January in case the tax increase did not happen. Every single small business owner that I've talked to has told me the same thing. The two people that I'm getting ready to hire might disagree with your premise that the republican hostage-taking sunk the ship.

I really don't think that the class warfare rhetoric is helpful to getting this economy back on track and getting people back to work.

I'd like to know where you found a pool of people willing to wait months on the possibility of a job offer? I'm sure they'd really appreciate your opposition to unemployment benefits while they wait.

I haven't made an offer to these people or told them that I was definitely going to hire them if the tax cuts were extended. They are not sitting around waiting on me - if another job becomes available they are free to take it.

My point is that many small business owners will be hiring if the tax cuts are extended. If not, we will pay our taxes to the government so they can study how cocaine affects monkeys - take your pick.

I'm sure the unemployed appreciate your willingness to raise taxes on the job creators so that they are forced to stay on unemployment.

When I was at the points in my life when I was looking for a job I was willing to do whatever neccesary to get hired. Sometimes that meant waiting for an opening. Jobs are a privilege, not a right.

That is the biggest load of BS I have seen on this board in some time.

It certainly isn't a 'right' to be hired for a particular position, but it is definitely a 'right' in our pursuit of life and liberty to have a job. I am sure that some members on this board think it would be a privilege to work for them, but I have a feeling that the word 'nightmare' could easily and more realistically be substituted in those instances.

ps. I didn't mean you Margarita! 😉

Of all the people to take a hit, even if it isn't much. They can least afford it.

The numbers at our local food banks and shelters have already increased substantially with many working families that just need a few more dollars to make it to the end of the month.

"The only groups likely to face a tax increase are those near the bottom of the income scale -- individuals who make less than $20,000 and families with earnings below $40,000.
Their payroll tax savings are less than the $400 or $800 they will lose from the Making Work Pay credit."

Good point, right now corporations are holding on to record amounts of cash and are not hiring so how in the hell is this going to be an incentive? They have reduced their labor force and with five people for every job they are forcing those working to produce more for the same pay for fear of losing their jobs. Trickle down is and always has been a load of crap and the Bush tax cuts have not and will not work. Obama caved, it seems eveyone but him knew the Republicans would have voted to extend unemployment benefits.

Does anyone have any suggestions on who the candidate for the 2012 Democratic ticket should be?

If these are "Bush's tax cuts," who hiked the taxes in the first place? Was it the Democrats who had raised the taxes on the middle and upper class, prior to the cuts?
