House Republicans will vote next Wednesday, Jan. 12, to repeal the new health care law, making good on a top-tier GOP campaign promise and setting up a showdown with President Barack Obama over his signature domestic policy achievement. The repeal effort is not expected to succeed, given that Democrats maintain control of the Senate and the president can veto the legislation, but Republicans also plan to chip away at pieces of the law over the long term.

One campaign promise down for the GOP..

61I agree with the thoughts on modification versus outright repeal. I was just focussed on not losing everything for months on end. Speaking of months, the reports this morning are talking about how there will be MORE hearings for many more months. Hasn't this horse been beat enough. I can't imagine there are many issues that haven't been debated. Last year, the GOP said they had a plan that was better than Obamacare so where is it? They wanted to offer amendments- where are they? I say get on with it or this will polarize Congress for another two years. Maybe that's the point and then again, a slow moving Congress is not always a bad thing...

Congress needs to focus on just putting people to work and creating new jobs.
This was Obama's top priority two years ago. Talk about a waste...

I think it's easy now to forget how grim things were looking in mid-late 2008. And while employment hasn't picked up for assorted reasons how it would be a whole lot worse without the banking bailout preserving access to credit to some degree and federal support of the auto/heavy manufacturing sector.

This is pure grandstanding on the part of the House because they don't have the votes to make it work in the Senate. (They'd probably actually have to have a super-majority in the Senate to even get it to a vote because I suspect it will be fillibustered there otherwise)
It will never come before the Senate not because Reid thinks that the healthcare package is great and shouldn't be trifled but rather because there are 23 Dems up for reelection in 2012. He saw what happened on the other side of building. You can look at it two ways. He's worried that too many of the 23 would jump ship after seeing what just happened in the last election, or he's keeping it off of the table so that it does not become a prominent item in the collective consciousness of the voting public in a year and ten months.
The Senate is set to act..
The Republican effort to bring down President Obama's healthcare reform law is expected to fail by party lines later Wednesday, but the vote will put vulnerable incumbents on the hot seat in a debate that will likely dominate the election cycle.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said the vote on Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell's (R-Ky.) amendment would take place in the late afternoon, between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m., because many senators want to speak on it.
And it was defeated..
Senate Democrats block a Republican effort to repeal the health care reform law enacted last year.

Thank God.
Now can they PLEASE focus on doing something productive to improve our country and stop wasting time and money?

No, now the GOP has vowed to defund it. I did find it interesting that it failed on party lines (47-51) based on who was there. I am trying to see which two weren't there. What was more important than this?

A blizzard? :idontno:
Democrat Mark Warner of Virginia and Independent Joe Lieberman of Connecticut missed the vote. Nothing found on why though. Surprised they weren't already in DC to miss the blizzard. I flew out of DC late last night and the weather was ok.
