Joe Zamudio and the Gabrielle Giffords shooting: How an armed hero nearly shot the wrong man. - By William Saletan - Slate Magazine
The Wall Street Journal didn't get the whole story, it seems.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"But before we embrace Zamudio's brave intervention as proof of the value of being armed, let's hear the whole story. "I came out of that store, I clicked the safety off, and I was ready," he explained on Fox and Friends. "I had my hand on my gun. I had it in my jacket pocket here. And I came around the corner like this." Zamudio demonstrated how his shooting hand was wrapped around the weapon, poised to draw and fire. As he rounded the corner, he saw a man holding a gun. "And that's who I at first thought was the shooter," Zamudio recalled. "I told him to 'Drop it, drop it!' "
But the man with the gun wasn't the shooter. He had wrested the gun away from the shooter. "Had you shot that guy, it would have been a big, fat mess," the interviewer pointed out."
"This is a much more dangerous picture than has generally been reported. Zamudio had released his safety and was poised to fire when he saw what he thought was the killer still holding his weapon. Zamudio had a split second to decide whether to shoot. He was sufficiently convinced of the killer's identity to shove the man into a wall. But Zamudio didn't use his gun.
That's how close he came to killing an innocent man. He was, as he acknowledges, "very lucky."

The Country is going to crap and you want to block free speech? I don't live my life fearing what some mentally unstable person might do. Good luck trying to silence Americans and their honest opinions.
This is just the far left trying to silence their opponents. Attempts to take away liberty could prove to be far deadlier. Too many forget how much was sacrificed to get it.
Andrew,
I know you want to practice your Fox talking points about losing your freedoms and gov't too big and yada yada but look to your left and right. There are some awesome points being made. Really solid debate from two opposing viewpoints. heshup with me for a second and let's listen.

I learned to make tables, chairs and oaken desks with no help from anybody, but sales and marketing were a big problem. If only I knew then what I know now.

The country isn't going to crap because we think people should have intelligent and civil discussions about politics and be responsible citizens.
The country is going to crap because people want to focus on partisan squabbling, lies, and decisiveness instead of solutions.
Suggesting you think about what you are saying and take responsibility for what comes out of your pie-hole is not blocking free speech.
So you think free speech is only free provided you or others approve? When those in power want opposing views silenced it's time to take it up several notches.
Geo, sit on the sideline if that's your preference...

People don't need a training class in order to use good judgement.I disagree. Law enforcement and military train, train, train, and then train some more. They know that until you are in an emergency situation you cannot be sure how you will react, whether you will lose access to your good judgment under pressure, so they rely on their training to kick in. You might be one of the ones with the kind of calm, even temperament needed to stay focused, or you might lose it. Training teaches you how to minimize the danger of losing it and exercising poor judgment. People who think they can just walk around with a gun and they will automatically know what to do in an emergency scare me. 😱

How did we go from hunting to emergency situations? We aren't performing a 2am covert ops raid on Kaddafi's palace here we're talking rabbits, quail, turkeys and deer on private property in the middle of nowhere with loud hunting colors.
Anyone that purchases a hunting rifle has an obligation to learn how to properly use it whatever their method. I don't know a single legal gun owner that hasn't been to the range.

Gun Ownership Mandatory In Kennesaw, Georgia
Crime Rate Plummets
by Chuck Baldwin
The New American magazine reminds us that March 25th marked the 16th anniversary of Kennesaw, Georgia's ordinance requiring heads of households (with certain exceptions) to keep at least one firearm in their homes.
*******************************
A copy of part of the town ordinance:
?ARTICLE I. IN GENERAL
Sec. 34-1. Heads of households to maintain firearms.
(a) In order to provide for the emergency management of the city, and further in order to provide for and protect the safety, security and general welfare of the city and its inhabitants, every head of household residing in the city limits is required to maintain a firearm, together with ammunition therefor.
(b) Exempt from the effect of this section are those heads of households who suffer a physical or mental disability which would prohibit them from using such a firearm. Further exempt from the effect of this section are those heads of households who are paupers or who conscientiously oppose maintaining firearms as a result of beliefs or religious doctrine, or persons convicted of a felony.
(Code 1986, ? 4-3-10)
Sec. 34-2. Use of firearms.
No person shall fire a gun, pistol or other firearm in the city, except in the defense of person or property, and except peace officers or military forces of this state or the United States, in the discharge of official duties.?
***************************
The city's population grew from around 5,000 in 1980 to 13,000 by 1996 (latest available estimate). Yet there have been only three murders: two with knives (1984 and 1987) and one with a firearm (1997). After the law went into effect in 1982, crime against persons plummeted 74 percent compared to 1981, and fell another 45 percent in 1983 compared to 1982.
And it has stayed impressively low. In addition to nearly non-existent homicide (murders have averaged a mere 0.19 per year), the annual number of armed robberies, residential burglaries, commercial burglaries, and rapes have averaged, respectively, 1.69, 31.63, 19.75, and 2.00 through 1998.
With all the attention that has been heaped upon the lawful possession of firearms lately, you would think that a city that requires gun ownership would be the center of a media feeding frenzy. It isn't. The fact is I can't remember a major media outlet even mentioning Kennesaw. Can you?
The reason is obvious. Kennesaw proves that the presence of firearms actually improves safety and security. This is not the message that the media want us to hear. They want us to believe that guns are evil and are the cause of violence.
The facts tell a different story. What is even more interesting about Kennesaw is that the city's crime rate decreased with the simple knowledge that the entire community was armed. The bad guys didn't force the residents to prove it. Just knowing that residents were armed prompted them to move on to easier targets. Most criminals don't have a death wish.
There have been two occasions in my own family when the presence of a handgun averted potential disaster. In both instances the gun was never aimed at a person and no shot was fired.

Every day is code green in Kennesaw, Georgia.
The town which made headlines 20 years ago this month has enjoyed low crime rates and offers many tips on fighting crime.
Perhaps it could teach the nation a thing or two about fighting terrorism as well.
Homeland Security Director Tom Ridge recently announced a color code to measure terrorist threats in this country. The code begins with the color green ? indicating a low security risk ? and from there escalates to blue, yellow, orange and red.
Director Ridge said that it may be several years before we sink below a level yellow alert ? the color yellow meaning the level of risk is ?elevated.?
Well, that may be true in most places. But not in Kennesaw, where residents are celebrating two decades of crime-free living.
Every day is code green in Kennesaw, Georgia.
It was twenty years ago this month that city officials embarked upon a bold experiment. They enacted a law requiring every household to own a firearm, exempting those with criminal records or religious objections.
The results of this experiment have been phenomenal, showing that armed citizens deter crime.
An early study (in 1982) found that the residential burglary rated in Kennesaw had fallen 89 percent in the seven months following the law?s enactment. That drop far outpaced the more modest 10.4 percent drop in the entire state of Georgia during that same period.
In the ensuing years, the crime rate has remained at basement levels. According to the Kennesaw Police Department, there was less than one property crime for every 1,000 people in 1998. That?s down from 11 such crimes per 1,000 residents in 1981 ? the year before the gun law was enacted.

Interesting article. But I don't think folks are against having a gun in the house. I think they are against the wild wild west where everyone is packing heat at the Tom Thumb and where the guns being carried hold 30 bullets.
