...I am huge college football fanatic. I get it bad this time every year. ROLL TIDE!!!!!!!...
With your avatar, I find your fanaticism about college football rather suprising. :floor: I hear that there is a good reason as to why elephants have tough skin... they need it to help buffer the ridicule from other SEC fans.

Yes, you gotta have tough skin, especially the way things have gone for us the last few years. Hey, but I have tough skin. (I think I am gonna need it, yet again!)

Well Kurt,

Look at that. . . the Vols are ranked WAY ahead of the Gators. Sadly the Utes are not ranked--maybe Urban Meyer should have stayed out West. I'm sure if he begs hard enough, they'll give him his old job back.

Envy, JOe, pure envy. We may have been a bit down the last few years, but the rest of the league still has a LONG way to go to catch up with what we have accomplished in 113 years of playing football.

So ridicule away, big boy :nono1:

Care to put a little wager on the Bama/UF game this year? Put your money where your mouth is, Kurt. ;-)

If I remember correctly, the last time the two teams met, Bama laid some major wood to the Gayters - for the second time in the same season.

A few rounds of drinks, perhaps? I'll be in Sandestin the weekend of October 14 - two weeks after the game.

And it was only six years ago, Kurt. The two teams haven't played since. UF ain't exactly set the world on fire during that period, either.

JB, relax, I don't even keep up with football anymore -- just trying to see the level of devotion you fans have toward your school. I am still curious though, how UA came up with an elephant for a mascot, and shouldn't the tag line be something like, "charge," instead of roll tide? Afterall, we are talking about elephants.

For you AU folks, what is up with the dual mascots, Tiger and Eagle? :idontno: I just don't understand. Tigers and Elephants are not even native to this area, although the Wooly Mammoth was very long ago. At least UF and UGA, okay, GT too, have mascots that are found in great numbers in each state.

Is it football season yet?

*sighs*

Auburn's nickname is the Tigers.

Auburn's battle cry is "WAR EAGLE!"

Through the years, these two Auburn terms have often been used interchangeably and incorrectly. There are hats and T-shirts with Auburn War Eagles on them. Even the news media has been known to refer to an Auburn team as the War Eagles or to an Auburn player as a War Eagle. In fact, when the Tigers play a game on the road, there is often an article written in the local paper wondering why Auburn has three nicknames..the Auburn Tigers, the Auburn War Eagles and the Auburn Plainsmen.

To set the record straight, Auburn has only one nickname..the Auburn Tigers. "War Eagle" is a battle cry, used by Auburn fans,in the same manner Alabama fans yell "Roll Tide!" and Arkansas fans yell "Sooie Pig!"
You never hear Alabama referred to as the 'Alabama Roll Tides' or Arkansas as the 'Arkansas Sooie Pigs' and to call Auburn teams the 'Auburn War Eagles'
would be just as incorrect.

The battle cry "War Eagle" should never have an "s" on the end of it.

The nickname "Tigers" comes from a line in Oliver Goldsmith's poem, "The Deserted Village," published in May 1770, "where crouching tigers wait their hapless prey..."

The term "Plainsmen" comes from a line in that same Goldsmith poem, "Sweet Auburn, loveliest (sic) village of the plain..."

Since Auburn athletes were, in the early days, men from the Plains, it was only natural for newspaper headline writers to shorten that to "Plainsmen."

It may be confusing to an outsider, but to Auburn people, it is very simple. That's why War Eagle VI, Auburn's golden eagle symbol, is named Tiger!

Wow, not that is helpful, but it is still weird that Tigers would have a battle cry "War Eagle." Is that some sort of verb used by Plainsmen?"

As I mentioned the whole Elephants and Roll Tide seems just as silly.

Look to the Univ of Georgia to set the example. Their mascot is the Dawgs (spelled funny due in hopes to show people the importance of going to school?), and their battle cry is Sick 'Em Dawgs! You get it? It actually ties to the mascot, and is something that the Dawgs can do. No matter how you slice it, a Tiger cannot War Eagle, and an Elephant cannot Roll Tide. However, a Dawg can always Sick 'Em!:idontno: I guess I will always think the AU and UA mascot/battle cry as being awkward.

Joe, there is a story behind "War Eagle"..do you REALLY want me to waste bandwidth??? :laughing1 Suuuure ya do: Linkage here

Conversely, I know the story behind 'Crimson Tide' and the elephant mascot, because *small voice* both my parents are graduates of Alabama.

Yes, I am the black sheep tiger war eagle plainsman in the family.

I spotted a gator yesterday at Blue Orleans. Gator was playing some mean blues piano.

On the other hand, I did not see a Gator sticker on Kurt's vehicle on the beach yesterday.

Of all the potential origins for the War Eagle, I like the first one the best. However, since the origin is unknown, I am still left with a big question mark.

CRIMSON WHAT?
In the program's earlier days, the Tide was called the varsity or the Crimson White after the school's colors. The Tide's first nickname was the The Thin Red Line. The name was used until 1906, and then the era of 'The Crimson Tide began. The name was supposedly first used by Hugh Roberts, the former editor of the Birmingham Age-Herald. He used the term when describing an Alabama-Auburn game played in Birmingham in 1907, which was the last match-up between the teams until 1948. The game was played in a sea of mud and Auburn was the favorite to win. Bama held Auburn to a 6-6 tie and later gained the name Crimson Tide. The tradition of the name, Crimson Tide was probably popularized by former Birmingham News editor, Zipp Newman.

WHERE DID THE ELEPHANT MASCOT COME FROM?</FONT>The tale goes back to the Tide's 1930 season when the Tide had an impressive 10-0 record and shut out eight opponents and allowed only 13 points all season while scoring 217points themselves record under Coach Wallace Wade.

Atlanta Journal sports writer Everett Strupper wrote about the Alabama-Mississippi game that he had witnessed four day earlier in Tuscaloosa. "That Alabama team of 1930 is a typical Wade machine, powerful, big, tough, fast and aggressive, well-schooled in fundamentals, and the best blocking team for this early in the season that I have ever seen. When those big brutes hit you I mean you go down and stay down, often for an additional two minutes.

"Coach Wade started his second team that was plenty big and they went right to their knitting scoring a touchdown in the first quarter against one of the best fighting small lines that I have seen. For Ole Miss was truly battling the big boys for every inch of the ground."At the end of the quarter, the earth started to tremble, there was a distant rumble that continued to grow. Some excited fan in the stands bellowed, 'Hold your horses, the elephants are coming,' and out stamped this Alabama varsity. "It was the first time that I had seen it and the size of the entire eleven nearly knocked me cold, men that I had seen play last year looking like they had nearly doubled in size." Across the country, the Alabama linemen became known as the "Red Elephants."
