okay my little fitness wannabees... here it is. and thanks for deciding on this thread name. After sharing our goals and strategies for fitness and weight reduction, we'll all be sowell on sowal!!!

Cork and I are doing at least one yoga/pilates class per week now. plus we bicycled the other day (almost killed me). and plan to do exercise on our own at home as well.

as far as diet and weight reduction, we haven't really gotten very far. I'm reading two current resources for motivation and just general info: Body for Life for Women (A Woman's plan for Physical and Mental Transformation) - Pamela Peeke, MD, and The Reality Diet (fight fat with fiber) - Schnur, MD. They are both really straightforward, no nonsense approaches to weight loss - and include a lot of info on weekly menus, exercise, etc.

I know that I will need a menu plan to follow in the first 3 months of my "transformation". If I have a reasonable menu to follow, then I don't mind shopping and cooking. Having it all planned out makes it easier for me, and it makes me eat things that I would otherwise avoid or not think about eating (it expands the culinary experience)...

What are your goals? I need to finish up some of my reading and then I plan to put my goals on paper, along with my plan to achieve them. I have also already started a food and exercise journal.

I'll be sharing some of this with you. I hope we can all share successes, questions, recipes, exercise tips, etc... hope to see you on here every day looking for motivation and at the same time giving support to all of us.. :D

You went to NO- you get a pass.

That's the new rule- if you travel, you get excused. I'll write you a note.

OMG - I just exercised for the first time in over a week. Just haven't been able to fit in trips to the Y with full time work. So I rode my exercycle for 45 mins. here at home while Kaylee watched a movie and Evan used the computer. Now it's time for homework, baths and bed (for the kids - I have a couple hours worth of my own "homework" to do after they go to sleep.) Tomorrow the kids have a half day of school and I took the afternoon off - so maybe we'll manage a trip to the Y.

I've fallen off the SoWell wagon a bit, too, but have done so at home rather than on vacation. Nothing big that can't be fixed in 3-4 days of watching what I eat. I'd love to make enough small but useful lifestyle changes that help me keep my weight down without ever having to think about it. That would be heavenly.

Linda, you'll inspire me to join our local Y. I have been VERY busy at work this past month and getting kids back to school (back-to-school shopping, curriculum nights, etc.), but as of this Friday I'll have no excuse whatsover to not exercise.

Tootsie, you would have been a very bad girl if you didn't take advantage of your Mom's cooking -- Mom's cooking is one of life's great pleasures!

I know - eating with gusto at mom's house - a real treat in life. I do not cook the real southern stuff so it is quite a treat when we visit. portion control ? what is that when you are at mama's?

Well, my loss is 4 ounds for the last two weeks...not exceptional but I haven't been too good. I AM exercising at least 15 minutes each day..not much but I decided anything is better than nothing. As for eating I have decided to combine low carb with weight watchers. When my determination is lacking, I count points. If all is going smoothly, low carb works best. Not sure if it is sound, but need to be consistant somewhere. Just want to lose these disgusting rolls...never had them before 40....I look at skinny older women and they have them. Can someone tell my why????? With everything else that goes wrong, it isn't fair. What exercise would address them?

well, all I can say about the rolls is that our bodies change so much after 40. I think that we can really make a difference with eating and exercise. however, to commit to really eating well and really exercising our bodies regularly, is key. this is what we're trying to do here. it is hard.

I was a baaaaaaaaad girl today. I have found that I tend to "stress eat" and today was one of those days. I walked into work to a whirlwind of problems, sooo I had a cinnamon roll. For lunch, even more stress, so I had a sonic cheeseburger, dinner with co-workers to talk about stressful day, fried shrimp and stuffed flounder, 2 cheese biscuits....guess where I went. Am pouring a BF glass of red now. BAAAAAAD DD, BAAAAAAD.

Life's too short to get stressed out, but hey, if it is, you earned the guilty pleasure. It all sounds delicious:drool:

That's kinda what I figured...I earned it today. Hate days like that! I'm still waitin' on Toots to show up with that stapler. At the rate I'm going, I might need to have my jaws surgically wired shut!

One of my friends has convinced me that you should take one day every week, eat what you crave and indulge a little. Only problem was my one day last week turned into a long weekend.....combine that with the minimal exercise, not so good. But I'll get back into my healthy routine - and this week I'll skip the day of indulgence. Didn't make it to the Y today (forgot that they only have childcare from 4PM-8PM and I had to to go back into work early this evening to teach a class.) But tomorrow morning the kids are having breakfast with their Dad so I will hit the Y before work. Just need to get to bed early tonight, which I will be doing shortly (after a little well deserved Sowalling!)

I dunno about that - it's been a rough couple of weeks. I should be a better example! But if I can make time for Sowal, I can make time to be Sowell, right?
