okay my little fitness wannabees... here it is. and thanks for deciding on this thread name. After sharing our goals and strategies for fitness and weight reduction, we'll all be sowell on sowal!!!

Cork and I are doing at least one yoga/pilates class per week now. plus we bicycled the other day (almost killed me). and plan to do exercise on our own at home as well.

as far as diet and weight reduction, we haven't really gotten very far. I'm reading two current resources for motivation and just general info: Body for Life for Women (A Woman's plan for Physical and Mental Transformation) - Pamela Peeke, MD, and The Reality Diet (fight fat with fiber) - Schnur, MD. They are both really straightforward, no nonsense approaches to weight loss - and include a lot of info on weekly menus, exercise, etc.

I know that I will need a menu plan to follow in the first 3 months of my "transformation". If I have a reasonable menu to follow, then I don't mind shopping and cooking. Having it all planned out makes it easier for me, and it makes me eat things that I would otherwise avoid or not think about eating (it expands the culinary experience)...

What are your goals? I need to finish up some of my reading and then I plan to put my goals on paper, along with my plan to achieve them. I have also already started a food and exercise journal.

I'll be sharing some of this with you. I hope we can all share successes, questions, recipes, exercise tips, etc... hope to see you on here every day looking for motivation and at the same time giving support to all of us.. :D

For you gals who are quitting smoking...if you need support at any time, PM or e-mail me. I started when I was 14, and stopped "for good" Memorial Day Weekend 1999. HARDEST THING I HAVE EVER DONE. Zyban does help, as does support from friends.

Good luck, and if it doesn't happen Jan 1, just set another date. Planning and preparing made a world of difference for me.

Now, I've got 70 lbs to work on (not all from quitting smoking, but...)

bring 'em on, honey...

I vaguely remember trying to beat the hell out of our washing machine on my second day smokefree, so nothing would surprise me. :-)

It's not gonna be pretty. Just gotta pick a day....like tomorrow!! Fortunately, I have a good doctor friend who will help me out with drugs if I need them. I'll probably need drugs, inhalers, gum, patches and whatever else I can find!!! Oh, you'll be hearin' from me!!!

So true about the pics. I saw one of me that a coworker recently took of us (at a restaurant, of course) and I hardly recognized myself. Seriously. I had no idea my face was really that BIG!!!!! I have taken this week off from work and am getting a plan into motion, new diet/nutrition, maybe even a health club.

(Sugar detox is one of the worst. Good luck!!)

DD: THAT was a very funn poem...
Toots: Congrats on moving toward quitting smoking.

We had a fantastic Christmas Eve, Christmas, and New Years. Spent new Years weekend in Siesta Key to see my husband's father and stepmother and it was so gorgeous -- hot and sunny.

Ate way too much in the past 10 days and I won't weigh myself until this Saturday. I'm going to visit a few health places this week to look for a trainer, maybe a heated pool, yoga, etc.

My word to describe my goals for this coming year is "mindfulness", which I'm going to take to mean slowing down, paying attention to what is happening in the moment. So, this would mean appreciating every bite of food (ideally only eating good food), eating slowly, stopping when I'm finished with the portion and not continuing to eat unless it's fruit/vegetable at one sitting. More generally, it would mean being fully present in what I'm doing at the moment rather than worrying about tomorrow. I may try to be a mindful exerciser which means doing the exercise without complaining or watching the clock and just paying attention to the moment ("hah!" on this one).

I'm also going to follow Merm's lead and try to have a feng shui'd house -- which to me means less clutter, getting rid of a LOT of stuff, etc.

I'm right now looking forward to these changes... let's see how it goes...

Paula: You continue to be an inspiration!!
Mindful~~I like it!!
I thought today might be my quit smoking day, but alas, I think I might need to see the doc first and get something to take the edge off..you know, addictive personality and all...
Anyhoo, I'll see him tomorrow and after his 10 minute lecture, I should have a better plan. He thinks we smokers and eaters should just be able to quit...don't know what planet he hails from.
I guess my goal for January should be just "healthier"...and all the things that encompasses.
So glad I have this forum....I'm gonna need you all more than ever!

Mindfulness. good one paula. too often we just toss out of our minds some pretty important things we just don't want to think about - like being mindful or aware of taking care of ourselves.

DD - get to the doctor and try the new chantix or wellbutrin (zyban). I've heard good things about both.

And buy an entire supply of nicotine patches. The Wellbutrin helps with the mental part, but does nothing for your body's physical nicotine addiction. It is such an easy way to help yourself along- and you will feel beter physically during the time when your mind is going crazy.

I also can't stress enough about really plannng out a quit date. It will drastically improve your success rate. If you are going the med route, give yourself 2 or 3 weeks on the meds. Pick a quit date several weeks out, and you will find yourself thinking and planning and believe it or not, getting excited about it.

Free medical tip du jour-demand the cheaper wellbutrin-it is the same medication as zyban for less $$$

I was told that the Wellbutrin somehow also lowers the desire to smoke.
I have 2 family members who were heavy smokers One quit with Wellbutrin without patches. The other took it because she had trouble sleeping because her husband got cancer (not to quit smoking) and she went from smoking a pack a day to 2 or 3 cigarettes daily. (better than a pack) She takes a really small generic dosage of Wellbutrin only once a day at night (75 milligrams)
I guess it works differently for everyone. :idontno:

I'm sure you're right. A couple of people I know used the Wellbutrin alone and just put down the cigs after a few weeks. I just know from my personality that it will probably take it ALL! Why, oh why, am I so weak?:bang:
