okay my little fitness wannabees... here it is. and thanks for deciding on this thread name. After sharing our goals and strategies for fitness and weight reduction, we'll all be sowell on sowal!!!

Cork and I are doing at least one yoga/pilates class per week now. plus we bicycled the other day (almost killed me). and plan to do exercise on our own at home as well.

as far as diet and weight reduction, we haven't really gotten very far. I'm reading two current resources for motivation and just general info: Body for Life for Women (A Woman's plan for Physical and Mental Transformation) - Pamela Peeke, MD, and The Reality Diet (fight fat with fiber) - Schnur, MD. They are both really straightforward, no nonsense approaches to weight loss - and include a lot of info on weekly menus, exercise, etc.

I know that I will need a menu plan to follow in the first 3 months of my "transformation". If I have a reasonable menu to follow, then I don't mind shopping and cooking. Having it all planned out makes it easier for me, and it makes me eat things that I would otherwise avoid or not think about eating (it expands the culinary experience)...

What are your goals? I need to finish up some of my reading and then I plan to put my goals on paper, along with my plan to achieve them. I have also already started a food and exercise journal.

I'll be sharing some of this with you. I hope we can all share successes, questions, recipes, exercise tips, etc... hope to see you on here every day looking for motivation and at the same time giving support to all of us.. :D

What jdarg said. I quit using Wellbutrin and Nicorette. I had failed twice before using Nicorette alone. Wellbutrin/Zyban makes it a LOT easier.

Another thing I did - and my family and co-workers had a ball with this - was to take a drinking straw, cut it in half, stuffed a piece of a Kleenex in it, and held it like a cig when I needed to hold something. Sometimes, I found it necessary to act like I was smoking it. I looked really stupid, but it made the cravings pass more quickly. Eventually I was able to trade in the straw for just some good old-fashioned deep breaths.

I also visited an online message board for folks quitting smoking. The one I used to go to is no longer at that site, but I'm sure there are others. It is helpful to know there are others feeling what you are feeling when fighting the "nicodemon." That was, of course, before SoWal.

How about candy cigarettes to hold in your hand rather than a straw? I suppose you could end up eating a lot of candy cigarettes, though. We can still get them at the little candy store in massachusetts where we got them when we grew up so if you want some...

As for mindfulness, maybe you could train yourself to be mindful of how healthy your body is getting when you want a cigarette and don't have one.

OK, what will your reward be for not smoking -- I think you should do something nice but not eat something extra. Maybe subscribe to a favorite magazine. I get so many magazines in the mail -- it's less expensive than therapy and I get such good ideas.

during one of my many quit smoking adventures, I used cinammon sticks to "smoke". you don't eat them but they do have a nice flavor/aroma. plus, I like to use nice lotions (not really perfumes) but nice bath products to enjoy the smell...

OK, DD, Tootsie, and Mango, for each of you who quits, I'll send you a present once you quit. I just bought this present for myself because it caught my eye and I LOVE it, LOVE it, LOVE it -- I won't tell you what it is because it will be surprise.

Tootsie, 1/2 - 1 tsp cinnamon every day reduces blood pressure so cinnamon is a very good substitute for cigarettes.

Detox '07 has been postponed due to a friend coming in town for this upcoming weekend in the city of angels. After that (and the Florida/ Ohio State game) Kfunn will do her annual "winter" detox. Which should be broken by Jfunn's bday in Savannah. Anyone, anyone?

Seriously, my system is shot from all the bad stuff I did this weekend/week.

I thought the Funns were built differently from us commoners? Is "winter detox" like hibernation? ;-)

OK- I HATE water and ice cold hurts my teeth. However, there is this water called Smart Water by Glacieau or something like that. It has electrolites in it and I swear it is the BEST water ever. I crave it and it really makes me feel good. And, I have dropped an entire size by trying to quit smoking which is odd. But, everytime I want to smoke I take the stairs and I am on the third floor. I refuse to take the elevator at all. If I do break down and smoke, I make myself take the stairs twice!! I haven't gotten on the scale but my clothes are hanging and I have dropped a whole size in about 6 weeks or less. So, cardio is really the answer for me. I am wearing things I haven't been able to pull up on one thigh in two years!!!!
Now, onto a very important topic. I am extremely upset. I complimented Teresa on her hair the other day and she informed me that she was thinking of cutting it off again because of something about being MIDDLE AGE!!!!! Now, I was dumb struck because I could not figure out who she was talking about being middle aged. To which she informed me that WE were MIDDLE AGED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I did not know we were middle aged. I am stunned and quite upset. Middle aged???????? OMG!!!!!

Tootsie and DD (and Mango, too, if you're going to quit smoking), I'm not going to say what it is but just tell me when you have officially quit smoking and I'll send it to you in the mail.

Hint: It was so good I spent hours with it and I almost cried and will use it again and again...

Nobody should think what I think you may be thinking :nono1:

I can manage eating the right foods. My downfall is with exercise. What I need are ideas on how to make it work in my crazy day. Mon....leave the house at 6:30 am return at 6:00 pm, leave again at 6:45 pm for a service activity and return at 8:15 pm. Tuesday...leave at 6:15 am return at 9 pm. Wednesday ...Leave at 6:30 am and return at 8:00 pm. Thursday leave at 6:45 am and return at 6:00 pm....really tired. Friday, I just collapse about 4:00. Only get 30 minutes for lunch. Saturday and Sunday are open...:)....well most of the time.

How do I find the time to make exercise a priority? Is two days a week (Sat.& Sun.) enough to make a difference? I do know that if I will exercise, I will feel better, but I am just too exhausted.

Maybe you could build exercise into your day. Walking instead of taking an elevator, parking farther away, doing 10 minutes of exercise 3 times a day throughout the day. Your day sounds exhausting enough. Maybe little 5-minute meditation or yoga breaks?

:floor: Oh Paula, you know us too well!!!!

Got my script today for the wellbutrin--along with the anticipated lecture--surprisingly though, he told me he'd give me any nicotine Rx I need...what a guy!!!
