okay my little fitness wannabees... here it is. and thanks for deciding on this thread name. After sharing our goals and strategies for fitness and weight reduction, we'll all be sowell on sowal!!!

Cork and I are doing at least one yoga/pilates class per week now. plus we bicycled the other day (almost killed me). and plan to do exercise on our own at home as well.

as far as diet and weight reduction, we haven't really gotten very far. I'm reading two current resources for motivation and just general info: Body for Life for Women (A Woman's plan for Physical and Mental Transformation) - Pamela Peeke, MD, and The Reality Diet (fight fat with fiber) - Schnur, MD. They are both really straightforward, no nonsense approaches to weight loss - and include a lot of info on weekly menus, exercise, etc.

I know that I will need a menu plan to follow in the first 3 months of my "transformation". If I have a reasonable menu to follow, then I don't mind shopping and cooking. Having it all planned out makes it easier for me, and it makes me eat things that I would otherwise avoid or not think about eating (it expands the culinary experience)...

What are your goals? I need to finish up some of my reading and then I plan to put my goals on paper, along with my plan to achieve them. I have also already started a food and exercise journal.

I'll be sharing some of this with you. I hope we can all share successes, questions, recipes, exercise tips, etc... hope to see you on here every day looking for motivation and at the same time giving support to all of us.. :D

3.8 lbs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yippee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've been bad. It's been crappy weather, so I've been cooking/eating:bang: No excuse.
I did watch Oprah with Bob Greene on Monday and got kinda motivated to at least check out his new diet book. You can get it free at Tom Thumb if you buy $50 worth of the foods he recommends. Some of the success stories were pretty inspiring.
Today was the first day since I started taking the Wellbutrin that I just for a fleeting moment thought, "this cigarette tastes like sheeeeeit". Maybe there's something to it...my quit day is Feb 14.
OL--keep it up!! YOU are inspiring!! Good girl!!! :clap_1: :clap_1:

Thanks DD:wub: I'm trying! Haven't added the exercise part in yet! I wish it wasn't so cold outside, I love to walk. Well no, that was a lie- I can tolerate walking. ;-) I need to start back with my pilates dvd also. I bought some thera-bands for Sam but I may start using those myself. She uses them to strenghthen her feet and legs for ballet. I'll use them to tone. I guess that will be my goal for next week because my day if full tomorrow and we're leaving for an indoor waterpark on Friday. Actually I'll probably get plenty of exercise lugging innertubes up the stairs. :clap_1: Maybe I'll hit the work out room at the resort. I'm sure I'll need to work off a few extra points this weekend. My friend said she was bringing her chocolate fountain.

 Step away from the chocolate fountain!! :D
I know, the exercise is so tough. I'm like you, walking is about all I really can tolerate. Of course, if I'd lose 30 lbs, I might like doing something else. I had great success about 10 years ago with weight training...lost a bunch of sizes pretty quick.
Have a wonderful trip!!

DD - What a wonderful gift to yourself!! You will succeed.

As for me I need to abandon this thread. I cannot remember a time when I have had less desire and willpower..... and it is not as if I look good! Just sent my girl off to study abroad and she won't return until late May.:bang: I am excited that she has this opportunity, but miss chatting or texting. SO what do I do........you guessed!! Eat and flip channels. Not a good way to live. Maybe reading each of your successes will inspire me.

Keep going strong!!

Awwwww, iw, don't abandon us!! I understand your sadness over your daughter leaving. I still miss mine and she lives 15 miles away. I don't know what I'd do if she went that far away! But, keep checking on us and we'll try to help you through this difficult time in your life. Maybe you could just try to do ONE thing...like drinking more water. Listen to me...I hate water:bang: ..but you know what I mean. We love you:wub: and need you here!

Thanks....water is not my issue....I honestly drink a 2-3 quarts a day! Quantity of food and lack of exercise are my issues coupled with a crappy attiude. Just another valley to get through!

BRAVO :clap_1: to each of you, y'all are doing great.
IWIWT, what an opportunity for your daughter. I know you will miss her, but you can e-mail her every day. I have an idea . . . you could surprise her when she returns home in May with a new buffed body. Of course you can't tell her this, but it will give you something to focus on in the meantime.

Hang in there, IWIWT! I'll be so sad when our kids move on (though I'm fantasizing about going to SoWal more then), but think of this as time to spoil yourself and "love yourself" by focusing on good health! Easier said than done, of course. But the phrase "love yourself" really resonated with me (I read it in Oprah magazine) and it gets me to the trainer and exercising. I see that time exercising as time that's all about me rather than about taking care of others. Watching the diet is a bit harder I think, but worth it. So, remember that these months are "all about you".

Ok soweller's .....walked/jogged last night in the FREEZING COLD and stayed under my 20 points once again. I am trying so hard to lose about ten pounds before Feb 24th when my niece Maggie is getting married. Right now that is my motivation and my drive!!!!! I do not want to ever feel like or look like what I did at Christmas, I am only five foot two, so every little pound looks like twice the ammount on me. I plan on looking like a hot mama in Seagrove this July!!!!!!:clap_1: HOPEFULLY:roll:

KEEP UP THE ENERGY EVERYONE !!!!!!!!!!!! GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!

not wise, but just common sense! I can identify with iwish, can't you all? I've found myself in a place (more than once) where I just can't feel motivated to do what I know I need to do for myself. It will pass.

Iwish - go get a facial or pedicure or massage! do something nice for you.

What she said. I really need someone to come up here and kick me in my arse to get motivated. Every morning while getting dressed, I say to myself, next month these clothes are going to feel a little looser. Well, it has been a few months sense I feel of the sowell wagon and I really need to get motivated again. I have to before March!!!!!!

Way to go SGL, keep it up girl!!!!

Paula... that is so true! I forgot that I am a person as I have spent the last 27 years "taking care" of others. Not that I regret any of it, it will take a while to retrain my line of thinking. But you are so right....the next 4 months will be about ME!

Toots- Thanks for the words. It will pass, hopefully, sooner than later. I need to decide what treat I would enjoy...other than food. I hate to admit, but I have never had a real massage...although I enjoy a good back rub. Maybe a facial...how does one know what to ask for?? There seem to ba a lot of choices.

Well, I was told to come over here and give my story. I have 3 resolutions for the New Year and it's tough. One thing is hard enough, let alone 3 all having to do with health!
1. Quit Smoking!
2. Lose 15 pounds
3. Quit drinking.....so much
I've smoked a pack and a half a day for the past 5 years since I was 20. I've gained 20 pounds in the past 4 years and now weigh 205. Oh, and I drank like a fish!
Right now I'm on day 19 without a smoke and the cravings have really subsided. It is Extremely hard during the first couple of weeks. The problem I found was that I had terrible cravings to eat. I had always heard that you gain weight when you quit smoking and I now understand why. I did an excellent job of fighting those urges by the way.

I've started working out and eating right to lose weight. I've studied this a lot over the years and fully understand how to lose weight. Self motivation is a very hard thing at times. I'll give you guys a few things that I eat throughout the day and my workout routine.
Breakfast:
1. Oatmeal and a fresh smoothie. I use rasberries, blueberries, blackberries, bananas, apples, non-fat plain yoghurt, and skim milk. Add a couple ice cubes and blend.
2. 3 eggs (your choice), sliced peaches w/ cottage cheese, skim milk
Lunch:
1. Turkey sandwich on whole wheat. I add spinach leaves, tomato, pickles, and mustard. Subway is a good place to go if you're out.
2. Spinach salad w/ pan seared chicken. Add any fresh vegetables. Light dressing.
Dinner:
1. Pan seared tuna with steam brocolli and carrots.
2. Stir fry with chicken.
Make sure you drink plenty of water.....Warning: Do not exceed 2 gallons in 30 minutes!! I drink around 6 pints a day.
Avoid soft drinks like the plague!
Workout routine:
I do about 20 minutes of weights and 30-45 minutes of cardio at the gym 5-6 days a week. Make sure you don't overtrain your muscles. Give muscle groups time to recover before training again.
Hope this helps someone.

:clap_1: Congrats all on your progress!

Welcome to SoWell, Josh. :clap_1: Sounds like you have a great routine. And congrats on quitting smoking. I can only imagine how tough it is to do so.

As for me, I've been serious about working out/getting on the treadmill for 9 days now and so far so good. I've seen my trainer 3 times (every Tuesday/Thursday is the routine) and we do weights in particular. Then I walk fast on the treadmill for at least 3 of the other days and do weights on one of the weekend days. Boy, she works me so hard and I NEVER would do half of what I do when I'm with her. I told her that everything I do is for health rather than vanity, except that I want her to help me get my vanity beach arms by this summer. We'll see how she does with that! She'll be my "Patron Saint of Beach Arms" is she can help me accomplish this!
