okay my little fitness wannabees... here it is. and thanks for deciding on this thread name. After sharing our goals and strategies for fitness and weight reduction, we'll all be sowell on sowal!!!

Cork and I are doing at least one yoga/pilates class per week now. plus we bicycled the other day (almost killed me). and plan to do exercise on our own at home as well.

as far as diet and weight reduction, we haven't really gotten very far. I'm reading two current resources for motivation and just general info: Body for Life for Women (A Woman's plan for Physical and Mental Transformation) - Pamela Peeke, MD, and The Reality Diet (fight fat with fiber) - Schnur, MD. They are both really straightforward, no nonsense approaches to weight loss - and include a lot of info on weekly menus, exercise, etc.

I know that I will need a menu plan to follow in the first 3 months of my "transformation". If I have a reasonable menu to follow, then I don't mind shopping and cooking. Having it all planned out makes it easier for me, and it makes me eat things that I would otherwise avoid or not think about eating (it expands the culinary experience)...

What are your goals? I need to finish up some of my reading and then I plan to put my goals on paper, along with my plan to achieve them. I have also already started a food and exercise journal.

I'll be sharing some of this with you. I hope we can all share successes, questions, recipes, exercise tips, etc... hope to see you on here every day looking for motivation and at the same time giving support to all of us.. :D

:clap_1: Congrats all on your progress!

Welcome to SoWell, Josh. :clap_1: Sounds like you have a great routine. And congrats on quitting smoking. I can only imagine how tough it is to do so.

As for me, I've been serious about working out/getting on the treadmill for 9 days now and so far so good. I've seen my trainer 3 times (every Tuesday/Thursday is the routine) and we do weights in particular. Then I walk fast on the treadmill for at least 3 of the other days and do weights on one of the weekend days. Boy, she works me so hard and I NEVER would do half of what I do when I'm with her. I told her that everything I do is for health rather than vanity, except that I want her to help me get my vanity beach arms by this summer. We'll see how she does with that! She'll be my "Patron Saint of Beach Arms" is she can help me accomplish this!

Hero of the day!!

Remember this thread? I've been bad, but haven't forgotten my ultimate goal of health. Got the trip coming up, and let's face it, I'll be bad on that too. But, the ciggies are tastin' pretty bad these days, so maybe there's hope on that front. Will tackle the eating healthy part when I return. Let us now hear from the good girls. (And, the other bad ones, too!)

Missed my WW weigh in this week. I wasn't feeling well Monday so I skipped it. Still hanging in there though. The weekend may have been a little minor setback but I'm trying to get back on track. Not feeling very enthusiastic this week.

DD- have funn on your trip and don't worry about being bad. We'll get you in shape when you get home. :boxing:

Saw these tips on active.com and hoped one or two might be useful.

10) Brush your teeth after dinner. This is three minutes well spent. Not only is brushing your teeth after dinner great for your teeth, but it makes your mouth feel nice and clean. This feeling should make you less likely to snack because you'd just be spoiling that spearmint fresh taste with a Megaboxmart bag-o-chips.
9) No snacking after dinner. No late night snacks whatsoever!
8) Eat a big healthy breakfast.
7) Eat less as the day progresses.
6) Avoid trigger foods like the plague.
5) Slow way down.
Have you noticed that the French have really got eating down to a culinary science? They only eat one course at a time. They won't eat until everybody at the table has been served, and when they do eat, the portions are very small.
4) Run like hell from anything with HFCS (High Fructose Corn Syrup). The only good thing about High Fructose Corn Syrup is that it acts like a canary in a coal mine.
Just think of HFCS like pig slop. It is what the food industry feeds us (out of the very bottom of the slop bucket) as the cheapest and worst substitute for sugar they can come up with.
3) Exercise more and eat less. Yes, we already knew this one.
2) Only one dessert per day.
With this definition in mind a can of regular Coke or Pepsi is dessert. I also consider anything with tons of empty calories like a bag of chips as dessert.
I had never thought of empty calories like chips as dessert.
1) You must really want it! At the end of the day, the only way I can and will lose weight is to want it -- more than I want that cookie after lunch.

I'm hanging in there, still walking every night and do "the firm" tapes four times a week.....but progress is moving at a snails pace!!!!!! and it's so hard to pass up beer on the weekends :bang: I am a diet coke and rum girl now, and thats good, but...I REALLY miss by Bud Select:( Weight watchers has become a habit now so I guess I'm in a good groove.

One of my new tricks for keeping me exercising (aside from the trainer who is kicking my butt but it seems like it's paying off), is that when I think I can't do any more (e.g., walk fast on the treadmill, lift weights a little longer, etc.), I close my eyes and think of someone and "dedicate" my efforts to that person -- I think of the kids, and I've even thought about our SoWell friends who are trying to quit smoking (e.g., DD, Tootsie, Mango are some of the people I've thought about) because I figure it's hard to quit smoking so if they can try to do that, I can go a little longer with the exercise. Frankly, though, I think it's the trainer. If I keep working with the trainer for a year it's going to cost me about as much as a used car this year, but I figure I'm worth more than a used car! And we already have two used cars (1999 and 2001) so we don't need another one anyway.

Mango: Heck, the flatulence won't bother us at all. We spend most of the time outdoors when in SoWal anyway, right? On the other hand, it's pretty cold up north...

And DD and Tootsie... awwwe, geeeeee. And maybe sometimes I'll picture myself running toward a margarita to keep me on the treadmill.

Okay, understand I haven't read the 49 pages of this thread. But I'm thinking that I'm in. I got on the treadmill tonight for the first time in 2 (maybe 3) years. My goal is to do that every evening I can. I also plan on working in some weight training. I expect to start really traveling soon so this may not be so easy so... :idontno: I'll stay at hotels with workout facilities?

Ultimate goal: first - being more fit, second - 20 pounds. :clap_1:
