That's a shame.
His wife just had a baby boy a while ago, and they have Bindy. I always thought it would be a crocodile. Sometimes he got me nervous, especially when I saw an episode of him holding his baby near a crocBeach Fanatic
Just read the article on the internet
So tragic. He always scared me too. He was a professional, but gee you just never know. His poor family.

Only 44 years old. Very sad for his family.
And I know he was criticized for the way he worked with wildlife, but it seems to me that he did more good than harm.
I just saw a stingray the other day.

i was really surprised when i read this on cnn this morning. i wasn't totally surprised he got killed, but i was shocked at what happened. i always figured he would get snake bit or eaten by a croc. i feel horrible for his family and those poor kids.
got any pics?
I didn't believe this at first so I did a few web searches. Rumors of his death before have all been hoaxes. This is the real deal. Very sad to hear.

He has always been such a big deal to our kids- we watch him every day. He had his cheesy moments, but he was the wildlife bada$$ copied by all the other TV wildlife guys.SoWal Expert
WTF? Steve was freaking incredible! I just knew that if he were ever to be killed, it would be by a raging Hippo in Africa or something, but a Stingray? Talk about the irony. The guy literally handles 16' Crocs and the most deadly snakes in the world, and a Stingray gets him. One thing is for sure, is that he lived with vigor and died doing what he loved to do. I really couldn't think of a better way for him to go, if he had to go early. A death by a Crock or Shark bite would be too gruesome.

I am in schock. We loved the Crocodile Hunter. My friend's son just went to Australia with the People to People Org and he went to his zoo and I think he met Steve too. How sad. Dylan just said- I always thought he'd die by a snake bite. He did some crazy things for sure.

Yes, I thought a snake would probably get him too. Sometimes I would watch him and think "he ain't right." I feel sorry for his young family that is left behind, but as SJ said, he went doing what he loved.

Ugh...I just saw it on the news.

What a tragedy! I cannot believe this has happened. I am so sad for Terri and their children. My husband and I too would have thought a snake bite or a crocodile would have taken his life. And he did die doing what he loved to do, but now his wife and children have lost their husband and father. This saddens me and my husband so much! We really enjoyed his shows!SoWal Insider
Ugh -- while I agree with Smiling Joe that he died doing what he loved to do, and he lived life to the fullest, I sure feel bad for those kids.
However I think they will be OK. I'm sure they have a ton of support and their dad will loom nearly as large as he did while he was alive.
My 6 yo went through a Crocodile Hunter phase last year and actually emailed Steve Irwin to tell him how much he liked him. We got a response from the Australia Zoo and they sent him a "fun pack" with stickers, information on animals and a pic of the family. He doesn't watch the show much at all now so I don't think I will tell him about this. But it is incredibly sad. Such a freak accident.

He filmed a couple of his American episodes on Eglin Reservation and parts of the surrounding Panhandle. (Eastern Diamondbacks! Black Bears! Gators!). Both the people who worked with him for the show, and the people who ran into him at KMart in Niceville said he was exactly the same when the cameras weren't rolling- a somewhat crazy but good hearted guy who loved life and all the critters around him.

I always thought it would be a croc. maybe a snake. I remember when a venemous snake spit in his face, close to his eyes. I never dreamed this is how he would go. I always thought stingrays were docile unless you stepped on them. I will be more careful in the Gulf

They are pretty docile. The particular ray that stung him is called a bull ray and has an extremely toxic venom and if it gets you in the torso, you virtually have no chance since it causes cardiac arrest. I am not sure that bull rays frequent the gulf? I tried to find a site on-line but the server was busy. I imagine people are reading up on them around the world especially Australia. I also heard that this is extremely rare. There was a group of them that came where he was filming. They didn't actually go looking for them. They may have been mating or having babies, who knows?

They say with any rays, when you are in the water, shuffle your feet on the way out. They sense you coming in the direction and will move to get out of your way.

If this is what got him that has what looks like jagged teeth on it. Eew!

Finally saw some news stories on his death. This just stinks! He was a great guy. I feel so bad for his family and friends.

It would have been more of a shame if he died after getting hit by a bus in NYC.

I know he was a professional, but it still gave me the willies.
They showed that film clip on the news tonight where he had his one month old son on the ground making him take steps to get that croc's attention to get it to come out of the water and then he lifted him back up in his arms. That freaked me out! He was using him as bait to lure the croc. That was crazy.
