I guess this is admitting that I am old but I certainly do remember Eloise. It was my introduction to the Panhandle. We were newly married and had just moved from Maryland to Pensacola so that my husband could start flight school. We were moving into our first apartment on the day that Eloise was coming though. Our movers just threw our stuff into our apartment so that they could get the heck out of there. The good thing was that we were young and didn't have much anyway. We had a party with our neighbors that we had met that day and went to sleep terrified (at least I did) since the reporters were predicting that it would be worse than Camille. When it hit the intensity of the storm had been downgraded and I believe it hit SoWal. Is that correct, or was it closer to Panama City?

Most of the media outlets reported it as being close to Panama City, as nobody knew where or what South Walton was. However, the eye passed between Dune-Allen and Seagrove; perhaps a little further. It was a Cat 3.

I peeked out during the first half of the storm, and there was NO water in the bay. None, nada. I asked Dad what happened, and he told me to "wait until after halftime." During the eye, he propped our front and back doors open - and shortly after the winds came from the other direction, so did Choctawhatchee Bay. Thru the lower level of our house. No electricity for three weeks!

While going through some of my mom's things, I found a clipping - can't put my hands on it right now - but the jist was that "Eloise made landfall in a sparsely populated area between Destin and Panama City. Damage reports may total $1 million." What a difference, huh?
