Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Secretary Ananth Prasad, FDOT District Three Secretary Tommy Barfield, Florida Senate President Don Gaetz and Walton County Commission Chair Bill Chapman broke ground today on a new U.S. 331 bridge across Choctawhatchee Bay in Walton County.

Work will begin in January 2014 to construct a new $118.5 million bridge east of the current Clyde B. Wells Bridge and feature two northbound travel lanes with accompanying shoulders. The new bridge is scheduled to be ready for traffi¬c in summer 2015, with fi¬nal completion of the project set for a year later. Upon completion of the new bridge, the current structure will be used exclusively for two lanes of southbound traffic. In addition to the new bridge, a dedicated park and recreation area will be built beneath the southern approach.

FDOT also broke ground today on the expansion of U.S. 331 from north of State Road (S.R.) 20 to I-10. The $47 million project includes widening the roadway to four lanes, safety upgrades, drainage improvements and new signage and pavement markings. Construction will begin fall 2014 with completion scheduled for summer 2016.

Construction on the 4.6-mile section of U.S. 331 in Walton County to multi-lane the roadway from the north end of the Clyde B. Wells Bridge to south of S.R. 20 began in September 2012 and is scheduled for completion in summer 2015.

All three projects are part of a continuing effort by FDOT to improve safety along a hurricane evacuation route, ease congestion on the U.S. 331 corridor from U.S. 98 to I-10 and encourage economic development opportunities in Walton County.

Hope the NWF Daily News comes out in support of tolling the Brooks Bridge instead of the state paying for the whole thing.

I understand this new design will feature some exciting recreational conveniences such as the "dedicated park and recreation area". This bridge is a big deal for Walton County as it is the only route to the beaches in the County. I have heard that there will be a very nice boat ramp and along with the park it will change the way people access the Eastern Choctawhatchee Bay.

The 331 corridor will change dramatically upon completion of the 4 lanes of traffic plus turning lanes and new signal lights. However one thing that will not change is the amount of time that it takes to drive between hwy 98 and hwy 20. The new signals are necessary for safety as drivers have made turns off of 331 very aggressively in the past. I have heard from others that the new Freeport Mayor has a different agenda than long time Mayor Marse and will be very receptive to new businesses. In my opinion Freeport and the 331 corridor is about to take the plunge into the tourism market. Shopping conveniences, eateries and many other tourism related businesses will begin to sprout up from this sleepy little town. I am sure there will be differing perspectives but hopefully in the end we will have a much safer route to the beaches and possibly a nice meal, a full tank of gas, groceries, beach supplies, boat supplies etc. before Hwy 98!

Thank you for the post. The face of SoWal will change forever. Freeport will become SoWal's "city" - with every imaginable type of business and residential development - strip malls, outlet malls, restaurants, car dealerships, golf-course communities, apartments ...

Hang on to your hats!

Although most folks are not receptive to more traffic lights, I do hope that one is erected on the stretch of road pictured, at the intersection of LaGrange Road and 331.

Four-laning may take care of the problem, but I personally knew three people killed at that intersection in two different crashes, and one day years ago, while paying more attention to the radio dial than the road, I very nearly bit it myself. Embarrassed to admit that, but it's very easy to be northbound on that long straight stretch and not notice that vehicles are stopped and usually backed up by a car waiting to turn left on LaGrange Road.

If not a light, at least a nice turn lane would save lives...:pissed:
