2ND LD: M-8.3 quake hits near Samoa, tsunami warning issued+

TOKYO, Sept. 30 (AP) - (Kyodo)?(EDS: UPDATING WITH UPWARD REVISION OF MAGNITUDE)

An earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 8.3 struck in the Samoan Islands region Tuesday, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.
The warning center issued a tsunami warning for a wide area of the southern Pacific after the quake struck at about 6:50 a.m. local time. The quake's magnitude was revised up from the initially announced 7.9.
A 1.6-meter wave was observed in Pago Pago in American Samoa and a 0.7-meter wave in Apia, Samoa, the center said. There were no immediate reports of damage.
The earthquake struck about 200 kilometers south-southwest of Apia, Samoa, and 180 km east-northeast of Hihifo, Tonga, at a depth of 35 km, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
The tsunami warning center said that based on all available data a tsunami may have been generated by this earthquake that could be "destructive on coastal areas even far from the epicenter." An investigation is under way to determine if there is a tsunami threat to Hawaii, the center said.
