Service restored Thursday night
Emergency dispatchers were scrambling yesterday to compensate for a 911 outage affecting Walton County for several hours Wednesday and most of Thursday.
A spokesperson with the Walton County Sheriff’s Office said 911 lines went down late in the day Wednesday. Overnight crews on the state level and with Century Link worked into the night to fix the county-wide problem. The Walton County Sheriff’s Office is responsible for all emergency communications, including 911, for the county.
911 calls were re-routed to South Walton Fire District. That meant if you lived in Paxton or Darlington and needed an ambulance, fire truck or law enforcement, your 911 call was sent to south Walton County where the message would have been relayed back to Sheriff’s headquarters north of DeFuniak Springs and to units in the field via telephone or radio.
Employees and Century Link technicians worked diligently to get lines back up. Service had been restored by 7:30 Thursday night.
Once again, this should serve as a reminder that you should always have a personal emergency back-up communications plan for you and your family.
