Alaqua Animal Refuge in Freeport, Fla., opened its doors to a group of 'malnourished' horses brought to them from 'heartbreaking conditions,' Laurie Hood, the refuge's founder, tells PEOPLE. Now, most of the animals are showing signs of improvement within just days of arriving.
