At the last of two statemandated budget hearings Sept. 25, four out of five Walton County commissioners agreed to a 3.84 millage rate for the new fiscal year starting in October. The new rate is half-mil reduction over last year, and was only resolved after several citizens and investors complained that the county has taken advantage of high property valuations and spent money irresponsibly. The new rate will allow the county to operate with a budget of $137 million. Commission Chairman Scott Brannon was the only one to reject the decrease, arguing that the resulting cuts in parks and recreation spending would be detrimental to tourism and preservation efforts. Meanwhile, about 10 speakers took the podium to support the cuts, citing high insurance rates and low personal earnings. Suzanne Harris, president of the Edgewater Homeowners Association, said walls in place,? Anderson said. ?We fear the water coming in on the dune less than the houses actually going down.?
Commissioner Larry Jones said he was concerned about legal implications, ongoing maintenance responsibility and potential county liability. ?We simply cannot sign on to this agreement until we have as much of that information as possible,? Jones said.
