This photo was "borrowed" from Caroling and taken shortly after Katrina. We have stayed at Eastern Shores every year for a long long time, and were there just after Dennis last year. The beach access was not yet rebuilt, but there was a large man-made (and ugly) sandbar from scrapping, and this photo makes it look like Katrina may have taken it away. I'll be back in May and I'm curious what we should expect. Will there be a lot of construction (it looks like nothing has been done to ES Bldg 1 or any of the buildings to the west), will there be any dune at all, have the beaches extended further out, etc.

The condition of the beach last year came as a total shock, so I'm trying to figure out what to expect. Still, SOWAL is home away from home, so we couldn't imagine going anywhere else. I assume the Red Stripes are just as cold at the Tarpon Club.

Thanks

Kirkus says "I assume the Red Stripes are just as cold at the Tarpon Club".

You gotta love a guy that with that attitude!!:clap_1: :welcome: He's gonna be fun wherever he goes.

Now someone answer his question!

Here's a link to a picture of Eastern Shores right after the storm (scroll down) http://www.sowal.com/photos-071205-a.html. Here's a picture I took on 2/4/06 [ame="http://www.sowal.com/bb/showpost.php?p=71106&postcount=9"]http://www.sowal.com/bb/showpost.php?p=71106&postcount=9[/ame] . Attached is another picture I took of the Summer's Edge access on that day. I think the building to the right of the walkover is about 2 doors down from Eastern Shores. I googled Eastern Shores and Garrett Realty (800-537-5387) is renting places there.

We stayed at a house at Eastern Lake six days after July's hurricane (in fact, we were there as soon as they started letting people back on the beach). The only beach access was the public access at the end of the road, and that was just fine. It really wasn't enough out of our way to cause us any trouble. There were bulldozers on the beach every day but oddly enough it wasn't any big deal. No one was bothered by them and neither were we. The water was as blue as ever, the sand was perfect, and the skies brilliant. There were enough positive things going on that it took your mind off the devistation the hurricane caused. It seems kind of strange to say it was as great a vacation as we've ever taken, in view of the ripped up condominiums and destroyed dunes, but maybe we were just so happy that there was still a beach and the promise that things would eventually right themselves in time? I dunno but we had a good time at Eastern Lake last July.

We saw the area again when we were down at Christmas. Leeward I has been leveled--there's an empty space where it used to be. The side of Eastern Shores condo closest to the Leeward condo had tyvek flapping in the breeze. That of course might be different as it has been six weeks since I've seen it and it might have been fixed. What I'd suggest is that when you're sunning and swimming, park yourself at the end of the beach closest to the Eastern Lake outflow since that's well away from any beach restoration and/or construction. You won't be bothered there and you'll enjoy yourself.

You asked about the sandbars and sand--that's a question better asked about a week or so before you arrive. Last fall we made a trip to the beach every month for one week and we were always amazed at how much the beach changed in the four week intervals! What was a narrow stretch of beach one month could completely reshape itself the next time we saw it. So save that question for later.

I guess my long post all boils down to the fact that you'll love your trip in May as much as you always have before and that yes, the beer is definitely still cold at the Tarpon Club. I've sampled enough to give you a YES on that one.

The bottom line is that the beach looks great and getting to the beach is no problem. Again, just look how pretty it looks at the Summer's Edge access near Eastern Shores [ame="http://www.sowal.com/bb/showpost.php?p=71106&postcount=9"]http://www.sowal.com/bb/showpost.php?p=71106&postcount=9[/ame] .
