Hey,
For everybody that owns a beachfront house, I've been walking the beaches at night, looking for sea turtles, or traces of their landings to report for marking and protection. I noticed that quite a few houses leave their porch lights on at night. We yell at others not to use lights on the beach at night, but unendingly light up the shores with our own houses. If you must leave those lights on after dark, may I humbly suggest that you put a red bulb in instead of a standard white one. (The turtles don't see those and it doesn't interrupt their egg-laying) Put in a red light and show you care.
I'm talking to Wal-Mart, Ace Hardware and Lowe's about a promotional push at selling locals red bulbs at a discount rate, as well as having red filters available to everyone for flashlights. PLEASE NOTE!!! HAVING A RED LIGHT DOESN'T INSURE THAT YOU'RE UNDETECTABLE TO SEA TURTLES!!! They are sensitive to sound and motion as well. Best to steer clear of the beaches at night, but if you're going to go; just be quiet and pay attention to the sand around you. They may be coming up anywhere and they don't make much sound except for a slight dragging noise. If you see one, report it to my buddies at seaturtlewatch.com so they can mark it and keep it safe from the bumblings and stumblings of the unknowing tourists...
thanks for your time,
baldy
