Well, I donated some clothes last week to the Hurricane victims. For some reason I forgot to toss in several pairs of shoes which I set aside. Today, when I dropped them at Seaside's drop off point, I asked if they were still taking shoes. A lady in the shop looked up with a hopeful expression. I walked back to the car and returned with my arms filled with shoes. When I re-entered, the lady says, "Big shoes?" Her teenage boy was standing beside her, and when I told her the shoe size, I thought both she and he were going to break down and cry. I laid them out for him. The lady said that they had been searching for several days for shoes for the kid, and that they were going to Destin tomorrow to buy some. All I dropped off were some shoes, but for people who have lost everything, something so trivial to us, means so much to them. I had to get out of the store, and I shortly began to shed some tears for those folks. I guess there was a good reason that I did not drop off the shoes the other day.

People, let me tell you that many people still need some basic things, like useful clothing. When you are going through your closets, don't just get the old stuff. Include some items that you adore. The recipients will adore them even more.

Not too late to give.

Any idea how long there will be collection points at Seaside and Rosemary Beach? We're not coming down again until the end of the month, but if they're still accepting donations, I will rummage through our closets. We have lots of nice clothing/shoes that we'd love to see going to Katrina victims. It's been such a tough thing for all of them.

I am not sure, but I will try to remember to find out and post it here. They may take it day by day, I just don't know. Maybe Jennifer Steele can let us know. I saw her on the Ch 7 news the other morning, working hard to load the truck with donated items.

That feels good, SJ. Most of the places around here are only accepting new clothes with tags attached. So much waste...

SJ, you've got seven figures in your Kharma account.

I wish that were true, Bob. I am still trying to return payment for the kindness which has always seemed to find its way to me. I still have a long way to go just to break even. I don't actually feel like I am in the hole, just forever grateful and owing.:D I don't feel like I could ever have one figure in my Kharma account because every time I give a little something it tends to come back ten fold, thus making me always have a negative balance in the Kharma account. If you think this board is addictive, try giving. (that is to say that giving is even more addictive)

Joe,

I spoke to FEMA the other day and they are in bad need of insulin which is a non-prescription drug. A friend of mine is working on getting some pallets shipped from Lilly but that could take forever. Do you know if these drop off points will take some bottles for now? Also, where's the Rosemary dropoff? Went to the Post Office but didnt see a dropoff point. Thanks

The Rosemary Beach drop-off is actually a staging area for the local company (Eagle Painting, I think) that is driving their personal trucks and trailers to MS and/or LA. I took some stuff there Sat. and they said they are going to take this coming weekend off and go again the following weekend. They went this past weekend, and the weekend before and needed to rest a little. I don't know if they will be collecting things this week, but they will next week. If they are at Rosemary, you can't miss them. They have a bright red trailer and signs.
