I have two that I just adored:

Truman by David McCullough -- amazing.
Personal History by Katharine Graham. I loved, loved that woman and her autobiography was so interesting.

You've beat me to the punch. I thought Katharine Graham's story was gripping. It read like a novel.

ditto on Truman. He is my favorite president after Lincoln.

My Daddy was into politics, and as Daddy's girl, so was I. So when I was in the fifth grade, I decided to read the biography of every U.S. President so that I could figure out how to become one. I was convinced that I'd become the first woman president. It was very interesting to read all of those books.

But then I got into other things ... fashion, math, music, etc.;-)

BR - that is a really cool idea! I am ashamed to realize that I haven't ever read a dedicated cradle-to-grave biography of ANY of our presidents. How the hell is that possible?

Thanks. You ought to try it. Although the privileged have an incredible advantage (due to family money, networking with family friends, and what I believe are better genes -- so many families have multiples going to the Ivys, for example -- legacy might get them in, but legacy doesn't give them passing grades from profs who aren't wealthy), I liked reading the biographies of those who weren't born with silver spoons in their mouths.

Actually I read every biography in our school's library. I read an entire book every day. I finished my homework at school.

Yep, it's been added to my to-do list! I'm going to the library tomorrow. :D

Hopefully I'll start looking at the bios and realize I've read some of them, as that is a gaping hole in my knowledge. I guess since we learned so much about the presidents other ways I never read their biographies and chose other historical figures. :dunno:

Frankly, I think many of the "privileged" are too soft and overbred - like the royal family and dogs. They need some peasant stock and work to strengthen them, which is why I'll back a mutt who had to earn it anyday! ;-)
