Can anyone tell me if Van Butler has an after school program for the kids to attend until parents can pick their children up after work - and if so - do you know the fees? Also - what can i expect to pay for summer child care - this would be for a 6 year old - going into kindergarten - is kindergarten a full day or 1/2 day? - What do parents do there for after school hours and summer care? - Thanks in advance to anyone who can offer info - :dunno:

My granddaughter attend Butler's kindergarten this year. She had a ball and learned and progressed a lot. The after school is called SPICE. We did not use this service during the school year, however she is attending the SPICE summer program two days a week. I think the daily rate is $10.00. So far, she comes home very happy.

I would highly recommend Butler Elementary School. The administration has their act together and the teaching never stops during the day. I feel there is a great deal of discipline. They also use peer pressure to instill manners and correct behavior.

Over the last year I have come in contact with numerous individuals that work at the school and I have always been impressed. I have never heard anything bad by another parent.

Good Luck.

My son attended SPICE after school and during the summer from the summer before kindergarten until he turned 12 and grew out of it. I had no complaints. There are a lot of kids; if your child has been in a smaller day care there will be a transition but going to kindergarten is a transition anyway. The coordinator, Debbie Moon, is awesome.

At this moment, I don't remember the fees...

The one thing I would caution, and it doesn't directly have to do with SPICE, but when you fill out the parent information card for Butler, write "attends SPICE after school, please call parents if sick" in the margins, and highlight it if you have to. In six years, my son sustained two scrapes, got stabbed (accidentally) with a pencil, and ran a 104 fever twice and the school didn't call me as it was very near the end of the school day, and most kids go home, and he didn't complain. He went to SPICE. Of course, while playing his band-aid fell off - all three times - and once the wound got infected. Fortunately with the fevers, Debbie took one look at him and called me.

You can always call the school & ask what other programs are available... Not that they are run through the school, but there are other programs available out there. I'm thinking I heard somewhere that a church, or some group, picks up kids from the school and takes them to an offsite place... Not sure what it is though.

it is a program to prepare the students for kindergarten. Started June 16...in most places in Florida it is a part of the regular school year, I'm told; here the school system says there is no space for it during regular year, so they have it in the summer before the students start kindergarten.

There are also private Pre-K programs that are approved by the state and they are offered during the year. I think there is only one in Sowal--there is a contact/website for the area; I will find it and post tomorrow.

The Boys and Girls Club picks up kids after school at Butler and takes them to their location near the library.

Anyone know what the VPK (voluntary prekindergarten) is? I am VERY interested. I will obviously call them, but thought someone might know on here.

check out the web site: www.elc-okaloosawalton.org and click on the Pre-K
section. Not sure if there is an option for this program since it has already started, but these folks might offer some good infomation. Good luck!
