I like the idea of innovating the rental and living situation and we need help with more and lower cost rentals in SoWal - especially for singles or young couples (workers). I'm not sure how the laws are and somehow we would have to ban them as vacation rentals. Maybe approve them only in certain areas like north of 98 or north of the bay?

Would Granny Flats work in Walton County?

Some cities are taking the lead to facilitate new backyard flats. Los Angeles, for example, launched a new accessory dwelling units (ADU) Standard Plan Program earlier this month to fast-track approvals for more than a dozen designs for backyard buildings.

The goal of the Standard Plan Program, as L.A. chief design officer Christopher Hawthorne explained to the Los Angeles Times, is to “turn it into an approval that is over-the counter.”

On one hand I love the idea. On the other hand we don't need to cram more people in to SoWal. On the other hand it's better than making them drive to and fro North Walton where they are forced to live due to economics and limited space.

Walton County actually does allow accessory dwelling units that are 800 sq. ft. or less. However, when applying for a building permit for such a unit, Walton County requires the owner to sign an affidavit stating that they will not rent the unit, but it intended to provide housing for family members.

Thank you.

That'll work!

Iirc that requirement was being reevaluated and possibly going away to make room for long term to non family members.
