SoWal has a dog park thanks to the pro-active people that were interested. What are the chances that people would be interested in a 'community garden'? They're popping up everywhere, and it seems to me that SoWal is a community that would support such a thing. www.communitygarden.org

The idea of creating a community garden has been thrown about by some local peeps, but since they require much effort and have much liability for the land owner(s), the discussion is rather quiet right now.

My wife, who is a Master Gardner, says it is a great idea and I agree. In Orlando, Lui Gardens is a beautiful place and is tended on private grounds by an all volunteer force. There are several plots of public land that could be made available. Betty says it also depends on what size and type of garden is desired. It is a good idea, as we previously stated. As an afterthought, all Master Gardeners have to meet requirements to maintain their status as Master Gardners. So while others may also be interested, there is a built in base for a start. What is really needed is an organizer. My wife would be great but, unfortunately, she cannot do it at this time because of a really serious health issue. I am not a gardener, though I love to look at good ones. So count me out, also.

I always think of Eden as the "community garden".

Would a Sowal community garden be focused on produce, native plants, flowers etc?

My contribution will be to keep my "black thumb" out of the process. ;-)

I was thinking produce...

Seems like most people in the area are pro-organic... In paticular Grayton beach gives the impression that hippies (for lack of a better term) live on every corner... Not that it's a bad thing, if i were born a few decades ago, i'd be considered a hippie...

I think most people who want to grow their own fruits & veggies/eat organic do so with yard or container gardens or buy it from Toni & Hydrostan.

Could be a cool service project for Boys/Girls club or a school to grow produce for the homeless and food pantries.

Sound interesting.

I can't grow many veggies in my desert-like yard and whatever grows gets eaten by the racoons so a community garden might be fun to try out.

I can grow citrus however. I once thought that some sort of SoWal food exchange might be a good idea.

ie -when your garden is producing more eggplants than you can possibly eat, post it online and see who will swap you some eggplants for say......... carrots.

If anyone is interested I will have a bunch of kumquats/grapefruit in the next few months. Any takers?

I have spider plants that are GUARANTEED to survive anything - neglect, poor soil, lack of water, freezing weather, lack of sun!

They are now the border of my plant graveyard, er garden ;-).

Toni has some land on HWY 20 near freeport. She has mentioned starting a community co-op for produce. We did this in Gainesville on the UF campus. It does take a lot of work and people tend to drop out when they find out that is takes much time, effort and consistency.

If you're really interested stop by and speak to her about it.
