Last Thursday, the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office issued warrants for two individuals wanted on charges of felony aggravated battery in connection with a large fight at Crab Island on July 29th.

The active felony warrants are for 34-year old O’dell Brown of Lawrenceville, Georgia and 30-year old Tyravian Miller of Gulfport, Mississippi.

Miller is accused of hitting a man in the head with a liquor bottle, and Brown is wanted for stabbing the same victim, plus another, both of whom were taken to Fort Walton-Destin Hospital for their injuries.

Deputies say they have additional warrants for others involved in the brawl.

By Friday, August 25, Brown was picked up by Escambia County Sheriff's Office. The OCSO is asking Miller to turn himself in and says they will keep looking for him until that happens.

Extra patrols with multiple public safety partners patrolled Crab Island over the weekend in anticipation of another "takeover-style" event that was promoted across social media.

In total, law enforcement vessels conducted patrols throughout the afternoon and evening, with more than 100 vessel stops and over 150 calls for service throughout the day, according to the OCSO.

With fears of another Crab Island "Takeover" that were rumored over the weekend, a task force of various local law enforcement agencies was deployed to make sure the festivities at Crab Island remained as normal as possible.

Here's what we know.

Why was there an increased security presence?

For the past couple of years, Crab Island has seen numerous "takeover parties" that occurred during the summer. According to officials, some of these events have gotten out of hand.

In late July, a large fight broke out at Crab Island, which led to the stabbing of two men. Last week, it was announced on social media that another "takeover" was scheduled for the past weekend.

Law Enforcement Involved

According to Mayor Bobby Wagner of Destin, more than 30 officers from eight different counties were deployed to Crab Island during the weekend. The parties involved were:

  • Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office
  • Walton County Sheriff's Office
  • Bay County Sheriff's Office
  • Escambia County Sheriff's Office
  • Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office
  • Coast Guard Station Destin
  • Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission
"It’s simple. It’s a force multiplier," Sheriff Eric Aden said. "Though we try and have additional resources when able to work toward maintaining order for any event just as we would for a concert or parade, we often rely on our partners in public safety to assist on large-scale or high-volume weekends and events. This weekend was no exception; additional law enforcement presence is a proven deterrent for criminal behavior."

"We had marine, air, and land resources all working to provide a safe and secure environment for our residents and visitors," Aden added.

Numbers over the weekend

According to the OCSO, there were more than 100 vessel stops and 150 calls for service throughout the day. There were no calls for rowdy behavior, and the weekend at Crab Island remained peaceful.

Message from Sheriff Aden

"The best way to stay safe while boating at Crab Island or any of our local waters is to respect the laws of our community and party responsibly," Aden said. "And remember, boats and personal watercraft really have no brakes.

"Though most locals miss the days when families could truly enjoy Crab Island as a peaceful and relaxing resource of our gorgeous waters, it is still one of the most sought-after vacation spots to visit while here," Aden added. "We just ask that those not familiar with operating vessels or PWCs hire licensed captains or take the time to learn how to safely operate them before taking to the water. And simply apply the 'Golden Rule' and respect others. That would go a long way toward maintaining order."

Crab Island is a trashy place, what's new?
It’s one of those things that looks fun, until about 10-30 minutes in, and then it’s not? Kinda like the time in NOLA, when after drinking large cups of draft beer a friend/bartender gave us multiple shots of Jäegermeister on the house….

Isn't it kind of like the kiddie pool for adults. I don't want to throw shade at the place, but if I were, it would be a shade of greenish yellow.
