With fears of another Crab Island "Takeover" that were rumored over the weekend, a task force of various local law enforcement agencies was deployed to make sure the festivities at Crab Island remained as normal as possible.
Here's what we know.
Why was there an increased security presence?
For the past couple of years, Crab Island has seen numerous "takeover parties" that occurred during the summer. According to officials, some of these events have gotten out of hand.
In late
July, a large fight broke out at Crab Island, which led to the stabbing of two men. Last week, it was announced on social media that another "takeover" was scheduled for the past weekend.
Law Enforcement Involved
According to Mayor Bobby Wagner of Destin, more than 30 officers from eight different counties were deployed to Crab Island during the weekend. The parties involved were:
- Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office
- Walton County Sheriff's Office
- Bay County Sheriff's Office
- Escambia County Sheriff's Office
- Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office
- Coast Guard Station Destin
- Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission
"It’s simple. It’s a force multiplier," Sheriff Eric Aden said. "Though we try and have additional resources when able to work toward maintaining order for any event just as we would for a concert or parade, we often rely on our partners in public safety to assist on large-scale or high-volume weekends and events. This weekend was no exception; additional law enforcement presence is a proven deterrent for criminal behavior."
"We had marine, air, and land resources all working to provide a safe and secure environment for our residents and visitors," Aden added.
Numbers over the weekend
According to the OCSO, there were more than 100 vessel stops and 150 calls for service throughout the day. There were no calls for rowdy behavior, and the weekend at Crab Island remained peaceful.
Message from Sheriff Aden
"The best way to stay safe while boating at Crab Island or any of our local waters is to respect the laws of our community and party responsibly," Aden said. "And remember, boats and personal watercraft really have no brakes.
"Though most locals miss the days when families could truly enjoy Crab Island as a peaceful and relaxing resource of our gorgeous waters, it is still one of the most sought-after vacation spots to visit while here," Aden added. "We just ask that those not familiar with operating vessels or PWCs hire licensed captains or take the time to learn how to safely operate them before taking to the water. And simply apply the 'Golden Rule' and respect others. That would go a long way toward maintaining order."
