You shouldn't throw ANYTHING out your car window. Even bio-degradable stuff. If you want to gift Ma Nature w/ your compost offerings, please do so when the car is stopped.

An apple core is biodegradable, but that doesn't mean I want it bouncing off my windshield. Also, throwing food on the side of the road draws animals and increases their chances of becoming roadkill. And an orange peel may be organic, but takes years to break down - years of other people looking at your trash by the roadside.

I certainly see your point.

Thanks, Scoot!

I've haven't thrown an apple core with anyone else around - not a daily habit so don't worry ;-) But I never thought about animals coming close to the road. Good point! Thanks for bringing that to my attention! :D

Good points... though I've never thrown my cores out the window when any other cars were around, and I make sure it goes into the grass, I never thought about the critters getting too close to the road.

I do have to say, from my experience composting, an orange peel decomposes after several weeks, and an apple core in just a couple days. Just sayin'...

Well, IDK how they breakdown in the wild but (and this will sound gross) I had three valencia oranges on a fruits stand on my counter from last November until last week. They never rotted, molded or smelled odd. Heck, they didn't even get rock hard like I thought they would!

I guess it was the right blend of low humidity and temp.

Wow! Those are some special oranges!
I do have a couple in my fridge that my parents gave me from their tree... probably in March. They still look & feel good, but I'm askeered to eat them now...

When I compost, the stuff is getting mixed with all kinds of decomposing matter, plus worms and bugs are working on it, and probably other critters too, so I'm sure it decomposes faster than normal. I promise y'all I won't be throwing any orange peels on the side of the road! I'll save it for the pile at home...

On a tangent, has anyone ever used a composting drum? One of the ones you spin every day or so? I've often thought of getting one, and with all the wild animals around here scavenging for food, it's probably not a bad idea to enclose the scraps...
