Destin-Glass Bottom Boat ??

can someone give me a review of the Glass Bottom Boat in Destin? Length? Price? Where it goes and what it does? And exactly what is a "glass bottom boat"? Never been on one.

Eh. I went expecting the whole bottom to be glass and to see fish and stuff. Very deceptive. There is only a small area that is glass and you can't see anything. You see dolphins later on but it's not that great. If you have kids, you'd be better off doing the pirate cruise in PCB. You still see the dolphins and the crew keeps the kiddos occupied.

That's what I would have thought too. I've been wanting to do the glass-bottom boat, but I was expecting it to be like the ones I remembered from Silver Springs. Bummer!

My family and I were in SoWal two weeks ago and went on a glass bottom boat cruise in Destin. We were really please with the Southern Star. Rates are comparable to any other dolphin cruise, but if you have kids, it's wonderful. The captain is very personable, my kids AND I got to sit in the captain's seat and drive the boat, you can buy a family photo they take at the front of the boat when you first board, there's air-conditioning and refreshments on the inside of the boat, and we saw about 15 dolphins swimming together with babies! The captain said he'd never seen that many swimming together. He turned the boat around a couple of times so everyone could see. It was a two-hour cruise and I'd go again in a heartbeat. At the end of the cruise, the mates go round with a 'treasure chest' and your kids can pick something (a small toy, trinket or bracelet) from the chest. The glass-bottom was down a flight of stairs and there were six or eight pairs of large glass strips for viewing. At first we were disappointed that you couldn't sit there and view, but the other parts of the cruise MORE than made up for it. His website is: www.dolphin-sstar.com/

Ummm......it has been suggested to me that by my screen name I am affiliated somehow with the Southern Star.....I am a single mom living in north central Kentucky. I came to SoWal on vacation with my family. Until two weeks ago, I had NO CLUE what the Southern Star was. I just gave my honest review! And.....I didn't know the Southern Star was Christian-based until I saw the cross on their flag (which several other boats had) and the captain at the end said "God bless the remainder of your stay in Destin". I REPEAT...I live in Kentucky! (Although I wish I could move to SoWal!

I highly recommend the Southern Star. They are a VERY kid friendly boat.
They are Christian based, but not in your face.

The flad you saw was probably left over from our yearly tradition of the Blessing of the Fleet. All the boats in the harbor participate in this event. If I am not mistaken, it is an old Greek tradition.

One or two of the original five founding families of Destin were Greek.
