Dogwoods and Sweet Olives

For those dogwood tree lovers who do not get to enjoy them hope you enjoy these. And Skunky, I am sure you will be familiar with the Sweet Olive pictures as they are prevalent in South Louisiana, well in Lafayette anyway. We planted four about a year ago and they made it through the very cold winter we had this year including the single digits and have white flowers coming out on them. My husband says they have a very sweet smell to them and you can really smell it in the air when they are in full bloom.

Our dogwoods are looking really bad. I think that the drought we've had the past few years is killing them.

Great pics, LadyD. BR, the drought here did kill my one and only dogwood a couple of years ago. Kitty has one that's beautiful though.

interesting about the sweet olive, i don't think i've ever heard of those. are they as fragrant as gardenia? and do they attract bees?

Hey Aggie, we have been out of town for a couple of days and just got back an hour ago. As to your question about the Sweet Olives, my husband says they are subtle smelling but not as overpowering as a gardenia. And to compare them more to a honeysuckle smell. And bees sould probably be attracted to them.

I call them tea olives and they have the most awesome aroma ever! I always had to have a tea olive bush in my yard in SC. I wonder if they grow here? I need one by my back door!

Allifunn, I actually think that is what they are called here. If they made it in our yard through this past winter we had which had many single digit days I am sure they would make it where you are. Maybe you can find some where you live.
