Dr. Michael DeBakey, the world-famous cardiovascular surgeon who pioneered such now-common procedures as bypass surgery and invented a host of devices to help heart patients, died Friday night at The Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas, officials announced. He was 99.

Dr. DeBakey was the godfather of one of my roommates at Newcomb College of Tulane University. Her father, Dr. Boylston from Boston, was a partner in a medical practice with Dr. DeBakey in Houston.

Very sad.

Thanks for the link. Very informative. My friend's father died when she was in high school, so Dr. DeBakey was important in her life. She married a Tulane football player who had virtually a 4.0 in chem e. He went to med school and did his internship and residency at Mayo in Rochester. He is now a professor of surgery and on the board of directors at Mayo.
