Hello All!

I am coming do this way with my family and staying in a house in Watersound West Beach. We are very excited for the trip and time to get away. I am also excited about doing some fishing with my son and step-son. We bought a surf fishing rod in preparation for the trip.

After reading some of the forum, I think my first thing I need to do is stop by the Yellowfin store to get some gear and advice. Which store is closest to us? Is that the one I need to go to?

Anyone know about the beaches at Deer Lake Park? That is where the board walk takes us. Good surf fishing? What do I need for surf fishing rig and bait wise? Should I make a rod holder or just buy one in SoWal? What about surf fishing with our lighter spinning rods? When I was in School in Louisiana, we use to wade out and fish and would enjoy doing more of that.

I also heard there is fishing in the ponds in WaterSound and off of bridges just outside of our development. Truth about the bridges?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Surf fishing

I am by no means an expert, I live 7 hours away. We were down 2 weeks ago, I catch all of my fish from the sand, dont waid out. There were several guys who waded, I caught lots more. One thing that I did see that looked like fun, several guys waded to the first sand bar and were catching schooling lady fish as fast as they could take them off. I also learned the hard way that an inexpensive spinning reel will not survive in the salt water, I am investing in a good shimano reel for next trip. I use the 2 hook pompano rig with 2 or 3 ounce sinker, I have found over the years that the cigar minnow cut in half is the best bait. We tried all sorts of bait, this works better for me. I caught a 26 and a 42 inch red this time. Caught lots of blues and plenty of lady fish. I fish early and late from the beach in Segrove in front of Sugar Dunes. John at Yellowfin is a good resource, he is very helpful and is a super nice guy. The plastic sand crabs do pretty good, I didnt believe that they would work but they do. Yellow fin has rod holders, Bass Pro and Wal Mart also. Good luck.

I normally fish from the bank as well but with the recent arrival of the June grass, I've waded out more.

Apparently you are local, do you eat the bluefish. If so what it the best way to clean and cook them. I have caught lots of them but never kept them. From looking at the lady fish I would think that you should not eat them. I love catching the ladys, they give a pretty good tug.

about the only thing you can do with a ladyfish is get a big rod and use her for bait. they make great shark bait.

Bluefish are not that bad if you care to take the time. fillet them . cut out blood line. i soak mine in sprite and ice water for a day changing out the sprite one time. then fry them. not bad.

I would try peeld shrimp on the pom 2 hook rig also.
