Aquamarine
Alice Hoffman, an author I really enjoy, wrote this, but it looks like she did not have anything to do with the screenplay. So I dunno how this cute story (I bought the book for my niece) will translate to the screen. But the plot outline at IMDB is pretty much what I remember from the novel:

Two twelve year old girls are in love with a dilapidated beach club near their home. After a huge storm, they discover Aquamarine, a mermaid, in the pool of the club. Aquamarine then falls in love with the cute, young boy who runs the food bar and begs the girls to help her set up a date with him.

Thanks, Cil! Do you remember the comic strip Brenda Starr? (I think they made a very bad movie of it starring Brooke Sheilds.) Anyway, the comic strip had a story line about Brenda finding a mermaid who fell in love with a human boy. I was about eleven years old and was fascinated by the story. I'll look up this book; sounds like a nice read!

I do remember reading Brenda Starr as a kid; I remember she was a redhead with stars in her eyes and loved that mysterious orchid guy with the eyepatch.
I remember the bad movie with Brooke Shields, too. But sadly, I do not remember the Brenda mermaid storyline. In French mythology there was Melusine the water sprite, the author Lyn Reid Banks (who wrote The Indian in the Cupboard series) did a nice job with it, it's sort of teen-gothic fantasy that takes place in a run-down French chateau.
Would love to see a movie made of that story.

For me, there have been only a couple really enjoyable mermaid movies; there was the 1960's "Night Tide:" black and white, somewhat mysterious, with a very young Dennis Hopper. He plays a sailor on shore leave who meets a woman who plays a mermaid at a carnival--but may be a real sea creature.
I really liked the movie "Splash," too.
In my very favorite movie, "Local Hero," one of the female characters,a marine biologist with very subtle fish-like features, keeps the viewer guessing a bit.
Have heard of a couple other mermaid movies that I have not seen, it looks like both of them are only in VHS:

"The Thirteenth Year" - in which a boy turns 13 and begins growing a fishlike tail

"Mr Peabody and the Mermaid" old 1948 film in which a fisherman hooks a mermaid and brings her home to live in his pond. It actually looks kinda good.
