Gluten-Free in SoWal? Seafood or Mexican spots?

Hey All,

This time next week we'll be in Seacrest - can't wait!

It's been 3+ years since we've been down there and in that time, I have discovered I have a gluten allergy. (Not like get the Epi-pen, but it does effect my breathing somewhat, makes me very uncomfortable.) Gluten is the protein found in wheat (so no bread, flour, wheat, cereals, flour tortillas, most grains, etc).

I'd really like to eat out a lot down there since I cook at home 99% of the time now and would love for this to be a true vacation.

Any recommendations?

We really like seafood, Mexican, and just casual American stuff - nothing too fancy.

Hibiscus

For breakfast you can come to Hibiscus...we have a gluten free waffle wonderful... toasted waffle topped w/chunky peanut butter, fresh fruit, honey, coconut and pecans as well as oatmeal & frittattas!

Photocat, I've been avoiding gluten for the past year, and have not found anyone other than Cheri at Hibiscus (plus you can always get a great hug there and if you're nice, she may show you her prom queen tiara). If there are any restaurants around, I'm a local and would love to know also. I have been really pleased with our health food store "For the Health of It". They have some wonderful products, but of course, you have to do your own cooking. Good luck to you!

You should check w/ FIRE.

I don't know that they have specifically have gluten free entrees, but I have eaten several meals there w/o breading, bread etc. and they also will let me get items served over greens instead of on a bread product.

This is Rachel from For The Health Of It, we certainly try to stock a variety of Gluten free foods and have a great selection. If you are looking to eat out, try Gravel Road and Criolla's both located in Grayton Beach. Both Jesse (Gravel Road) and Shane ( Criolla's) will be more than accomodating and the meals are outstanding. We recommend that you give them some advanced notice.

Thanks for the info Scooterbug and Rachel. I eat at Fire and Criolla's often but never thought to ask. I just try to stay green and avoid any problem foods. I guess I just have to be more assertive. Shane always visits our table, so I'll be sure to talk with him. You guys are fabulous Rachel. What a jewell on the beach!

While obviously the pizzas and sandwiches won't be gluten-free, Amore Pizzeria has awesome salads. He also has yummy carpaccio.

If you call Amory ahead of time, I bet he can be sure to have substantial salad fixins for you.

My 10-year old son is "wheat intolerant" - I concur with what everyone else here has already said ... Hibiscus is WONDERFUL. Don't miss a stop there for breakfast. For the Health of It stocks a wide variety of gluten/wheat free products. Publix at Sandestin carries just a few items (we buy the Gluten Free frozen waffles and Quinoa pasta there for the house).

Cross contamination is an issue I know when you are celiac - just call ahead to any restaurant and I have no doubt they will all accommodate you!
