So true about drugstore color. I resorted to that for a while when I simply could not find time to go into the City for half a day to get it done. Two problems: (1) Drugstore color is industrial strength and will cook your hair in no time flat. Also, the color turns brassy faster and faster, with each time you do it; and (2) There's that funny little round spot right in back that you simply couldn't see

The solution for me was to move away from a flat color and have them weave highlights into my natural color, which includes some gray. The result is more natural looking color, much healthier hair with less frizzled highlights areas, and I can wait twice as long to have a "tune-up" because the weaving is more forgiving of roots and gray. That allows more time for the myriad of other maintenance appointments...sigh.

I may have to retire from my business soon, just to make time for all the maintenance (and I'm not just talking about the beauty regime). Is this a drag for anyone else or am I the only middle-aged woman on the Board?

i hear ya donna - i've decided i like pedicures, and am diligent about my face creams etc. other than that i am fairly low maintenance, and i still think it's a drag. can't imagine if i fixed (or even combed !) my hair, and put on makeup !

I've had a glaze done on my hair at the salon. It's kind of like a tint..very subtle I thought. My dd had her hair cut yesterday and while I waited I found this in a magazine. We may try it on her. It looks pretty goof proof. OTC Glaze
OL, had to run to the store today and checked it out--it does look totally goof proof. The suggested application method is to put it on your hair in the shower and leave it for 3 minutes, then rinse it out. You can use it up to 3 times a week to get more obvious results; I guess the color must kind of build up. Thinking of trying it myself!

Yours is a pretty color naturally. :) God blessed you with that.

I got rid of my light ash brown and have been blonde since I was 14. Then my gray started coming in when my daughter left for college, and it was ugly gray mixed with ugly brown covered in bottle blonde. I'd look like a total hag without color enhancement (and 10 years older). God must have been mad at me when he picked my hair color(s).

I know your pain....

I also feel the same as many of you do when it comes to my hair......the funny thing is I do hair. I just moved here from Tennessee where I did some extra training with Aveda, I'm nearly completely Aveda certified and I'm looking for a place around here to finish out my training. As of right now I've not had a haircut since last November, besides some small trimming that I've done on my own, I'm terrified of somebody cutting off the long locks that I've worked so hard to grow. I myself don't know who to go to in this area and am currently holding out until I can find a place. I have blonde hair for the most part, that is the parts that I can reach myself to do my own highlighting, can't wait until I can relax my arms and be pampered by someone I can trust to do me right. My mother loves the way I do her hair. I usually use a couple of different shades with a weaving technique to give her a more natural appearence. She swears I'm the only one she trusts with her hair, she too has had many bad experiences.
I will tell you this....the box colors in the store have metallic dyes in them. Those metallic dyes are so unpredictable, they leave you with colors you may not like, some are okay looking initially but the after effects are bad for your hair. Alot of times putting those metallic dyes in your hair can alter the way other hair color reacts to your hair....for instance....say you do your hair once with a box color with metallic dyes in it and then the next time you want to do your hair the new color may not fully absorb into the hair strand, so the color won't last as long, or say you use a box color and then decide to go to the salon on the next go around, the metallic dyes can prevent any other color from fully aborbing into the hairstrand, leaving parts of your hair strand different colors as the other parts on the same strand of hair, in turn leaving your color uneven in tone. Not to say this is always the case, it depends on the amount of metallic dyes used in the color. But when it comes to my hair and the color I put on it, I deffinately don't want to leave a slight chance that anything of that sort happens.
Well, goodluck to those hunting a new stylist, and let me know if you find somewhere you like. I'm hunting myself for a good place in this area to work, I'm currently in the process of changing my Tennessee hair license over to a Florida hair license, and can't wait to get back to work doing hair. I'd love to find a great Aveda Spa in this area!
