Florida is expected to lose another 10K in students this year. So do you think we should just keep the 500 teachers required to teach those 10K of students? What do you propose those teachers do?

I am unaware of some of the info. you are privy to and did not know that FL was losing 10,000 students. Thank you for sharing the info. I think good business sense should be utilized in all government entities. Perhaps the layoffs are due to that and not the economy.

I propose those teachers try to find employment prior to the end of their fiscal year, which I presume is the end of July.

In other areas of the country the layoffs aren't due to a reduction in student body.

Janitor, bus driver, lunchroom worker, certain aides, just about every employee that is not considered an administrator and is not in a classroom.

And exactly why are these personnel so much better than about 99.9% of the workforce that they get 3 years instead of 2-4 weeks notice?

NPR did a story months ago about the NYC teachers mentioned at the start of this thread...The individuals they spoke with all expressed a desire for their "cases" to be determined, and end to their exile from the classroom. The conditions of their holding room were described were spartan and tension filled. I can only guess but I would think some of those teachers needed to be removed, but others may be inaccurately accused of an offense. Some may be working the system; others may be deserving of a system that will clear their names and restore them to their profession. It is a shame on so many levels-taxpayer money that should be decently used and decent teachers needing a resolution.

It's all around stupid - that's why I highlighted the part about how they are sitting there because the people working on their case only work 5 days a month.

So much of this stems, in my opinion, from the scale of the institution that public education has become. I've been watching institutions from inside and out, and it is predictable that when they grow past a certain size, they become grossly inefficient, ineffective, most likely corrupt in multiple ways, tending to grow needlessly and uncontrollably, and almost impossible to fix.

The amazing thing to see is when some really dedicated people get in and figure a way to make success happen within these fouled up systems. Folks likke that, we could use a lot more of. How to attract and retain that kind of talent and passionate dedication?
