My daughter wants an ipod. She's 11. I don't have an ipod. She also wants her ears double pierced and a cell phone but she's not getting either. I know, I'm such a mean mom. Anyway, I need your opinion. Would any MP3 player do or should I wait until Christmas and spring for the real thing? What about the ishuffle? Anyone have one of those? If not an ipod, do you have one to recommend? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

LOL yeah, I'm pretty good at that one. Thanks for the support. At her age I'm thinking an MP3's might be better than cd's because they only like to listen to one or two songs from an album.

I got an iPod as a gift from my employer and my kids were more ecstatic then me. It is the bigger capacity one and I have yet to really use it. My boys load music from some CDs on it but we have not done much downloading from the internet. I have listened to it and it is awesome but again my kids are the ones that listen to it most of the time. We did buy another mp3 player for my 9 yr old and it sounds great too (both are digital) and is easy to use, is far less expensive but the iPod has many more features and alot more storage capacity. So, it is just a matter of opinion. The iPod has alot of add on stuff you can buy and Apple is constantly working to bring out new apps and 3rd party options are available (car adapter, docking station with speakers etc).

Just make sure that if you do get one and allow your kid(s) to download music from the internet that like everything else monitor what they want to download. Good luck in your decision and have fun with this technology because the sound quality is awesome. :clap_1:

Question: Once you download songs, you can delete them right? To make more space if you need too..

I saw the docking station with altec lansing speakers for the ipod yesterday at Target ..looked cool.

You will have to get the IPOD. It's kind of a status thing with kids these days. The "in" thing!

You can remove songs & change songs. Think of it as a floppy disc that holds data. If you don't like what's on the disk you erase it and put something new on it.

One other thing, they tend to be hard to find & even a little more expensive around Xmas time, so if it's a gift for the holidays you might want to get one soon and store it away.

Here are the specs on the iShuffle (recommended for the $$$):

I've been researching this morning reading more about flash drives vs hard drives etc..I'm amazed there's an ipod with a 60 gig hard drive! ($449) I would go with the ishuffle but I think she needs a fm tuner. Sony is coming out with a Walkman Bean Sept. 30. Will it be cool to have a bean...I don't know. :dunno:

Our daughter (13) saved her own money to buy the mini ipod. She loads songs from our/her CDs and checks some out from the library to load onto her ipod. (She's more into "retro" music so is able to find stuff at the library) Gotta be careful of which friend they borrow a CD from to load onto it though

go with the mini ipod. It has so many accessories that others don't and the downloading is easy, even for us old folks.

You can buy a cable to connect directly to your home stereo. You will never buy another CD again.

OL, I got my ipod last Christmas and I take "her" everywhere. You can name them once you download the software. They are really easy to use and I'm sure your 11-year-old is computer literate, like all kids these days.

I really enjoy mine since I can take mine running, to the beach, listen in my car...and the best thing, don't buy those "cool" speakers. If you plug an ipod into your computer speakers it will play so need for expensive accesories.

And yes, you can delete songs. I have changed my playlists a million times. By the way, my ipod is pink!
