Like everyone watching the coverage of Hurricane Katrina, I have felt overwhelmed by the scale of this disaster. I am heartened by the effort of some people here in our area, including individuals here on sowal.com, who are trying so hard to find housing for the displaced people.

The reality is that many of these people will be out of their homes for many months and will need to find employment during this time. So, I would like to begin an effort to post online jobs for these individuals. My hope is that we can coordinate the effort to find both housing and employment for as many as is possible here in the south Walton and Destin area.

Walton County has the lowest unemployment rate in the state of Florida and there seems to be no end of employers looking for qualified individuals to help from our local service industry to professional employment. This may be one of the best ways for us here in south Walton to make a difference.

Good idea!

The Walton Sun published every Saturday has lots of jobs. Many of them are service jobs but any job around here is a good job if you can afford to pay your rent.

Refugees grab jobs now because you have a lot of former realtors to compete with that already live here. :D

We always need substitute teachers! We may also need teachers as we registered about 60 students yesterday and today at Butler. Donations of supplies are welcome as well as these kids are probably coming in with nothing.

Where would we send these school supply donations. We have backpacks, etc. from previous years, particularly for elementary school children. We're happy to box them up and send them on to the school for anyone who needs them.

I know it's not in Sowal...but here is something I came across...

Instructors Needed
Instructors are needed immediately to teach various classes at LSU. If you are a college professor or instructor and are available to teach one or more classes, please contact us immediately at phawkin@lsu.edu. Please include your name, how you can be contacted, and classes you might be able to teach

This is useful. I emailed phawkin@lsu.edu to say that I could teach a 3-credit course to undergrads or grad students in management skills (for business students and other professional schools in particular) in a 4.5 day period so travel could be limited. A textbook wouldn't be necessary because I have many materials to post online. This is another reason to create an online course that I've been thinking about for a while...
