Sea Turtle Season Has Started in SoWal and You Can Help
Volunteers needed! Sea Turtles have long called our white sand beaches their home and females return every two years to nest. Share the beach with turtles by leaving it clean of debris, no chairs, tents, umbrellas, fences and no holes or hills of sand that could obstruct her path to a safe nesting site. In late summer and early fall when the hatchlings begin to emerge, turn off lights near the beach that may disorientate the turtles’ crawl to the surf. The Green Sea Turtle and Loggerhead are the two most common species that nest on the beaches in our watch area.
South Walton Sea Turtle Watch needs volunteer walkers. You must be at least 18 and like to get up early as they hit the beach by 5:30am, sometimes earlier. Volunteers can walk one day a week or more if they like from May to October. Anyone interested can e-mail Valerie Lofton, or call Sharon Maxwell at 850-897-5228.
