I know this is pretty late in the game here but I'm gonna give it a try anyway. I'm looking for a rental anywhere between Destin and PCB for the week of 8/18 - 8/25. There will be 3 people and we'll need 2 beds (not 1 bed and a sleeper sofa...We've had some bad experiences with that in the past.)

My biggest problem is finding one I can afford. I'm pretty short on cash right now but I don't want to totally give up on the trip. Is it unreasonable of me to look for something near $100 a night (not counting tax)? Do you know of any rentals or motels that might be in that price range? I've browsed through the vrbo site but most of them are either large houses that I can't afford and don't need, or small houses that I still can't afford.

Any help is appreciated!

I don't think you're late at all in this market (LOTS of competition). The time-frame you're looking at (mid-late August) is the tailend of the summer season here when prices are coming down off their summer highs. Sounds like you're not too picky on location (anywhere between Destin-PCB) so there is PLENTY of choice.

As you can see from some of the posts, folks are advertising to fill empty weeks in early summer and "last minute" drop outs. If you're willing to keep your cool going through the summer (the next 4-5 weeks), I think you'll end up with a good deal in the end. I know that 'knowing where you're going to end up' helps with planning your vacation and budget, but if you can hold out a bit longer, you'll find that your $100-per-day rate will yield better results as vacation rental owners go a week or two with no revenue at all during the summer peak season and bills start to come due.

Find a target location you really like and keep an eye on the VRBO.com site for properties marked "SPECIAL PRICE" "X% OFF" or "END OF SEASON SPECIAL" and their availability calenders. And of course, keep coming back to this website and putting your price out there.

What you're looking for is VERY do-able.

Kittyness: I am a big fan of the condos at Cassine Station. These were built in 2006 - everything is brand new and top notch. The condos are on the north side of 30-A right across from One Seagrove Place. Just walk across the street directly to the beach. Here are a couple of links to places I have stayed...

http://www.vrbo.com/101158 - 2 br/ 2 ba + bunk room; about 1350 sq. ft. Bonnie is the owner and I think she is renting at $150/day after 8/4.

http://www.vrbo.com/87176 - 1 br/ 1.5 ba + hall bunks; about 730 sq. ft. Hannah is the owner and I think she is renting at $115/day after 8/7.

If you contact them, let them know that John LeBoeuf sent you. (Maybe I'll get a fruit basket or something out of it!!!)

Good luck!
